Hello! My name is Winnie. Welcome to my WyzAnt page. I would like to share some information about my personal and tutoring background, which I hope will help you decide whether or not to consider me as your language tutor (hopefully the answer is yes!).
I was born in China and completed junior high there. I grew up speaking both Mandarin and Cantonese. In my mid-teens, I immigrated with my family to the U.S. Despite the fact that I came to this country at a challenging age and barely spoke any English, I got A's in all my language-rated classes (including French) in high school. In only a couple of years, I spoke English well enough to land a summer job as a cashier at a busy restaurant in New York's Midtown Manhattan. How did I learn so quickly? The answer is simple: I just loved studying languages! So it's no surprise that I enjoy helping others with their language learning.
So what sets me apart from other tutors?
First, my specialty is language tutoring, and that is my ONLY focus! I don't teach other subjects like many other tutors do, and I can focus what I know and can do best: teaching Chinese and English/ESL!:-)
Second, I'm a responsible and caring teacher (I'm also a mom of two teenagers!). As you can see from my WyzAnt page, my students have given me excellent ratings for my lessons, and FANTASTIC testimonials! As one of my youngest students' mom told me, "the reason my son pays attention to you is because YOU LISTEN to him, and he is simply returning you the favor!"
So if you want an effective tutor who truly cares about her students, you will want to hire me!
Thank you for taking the time to read my profile, and I hope to work with you soon.
(You will find more information about my Chinese or ESL/English teaching experience below.)
I teach both written and spoken Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese. I have a solid foundation in the Chinese language, as I completed junior high in Guandong, China.
I started giving lessons to friends and acquaintances when I was in high school. My first student was my dentist! I have since tutored students of various levels and ages, ranging from age 4 to age 69! They include young children, high school and college students, a businessmen/business owners, travelers, doctors (a dentist and two PhD's!), and moms. I’m currently tutoring several school-age children (age 5 to 16), and few adults (of various levels!).
I custom-tailor my lesson plans to fit my student's individual needs and wishes. Some may want to only learn everyday conversation, others may want to focus on pronunciation or reading, and still others may want to improve on their grammar, etc.
While I’m serious about helping you (with your Chinese learning), I also promise you that my lessons would NEVER be boring!
I specialize in teaching English to non-native speakers. I custom-tailor lesson plans to fit my student's individual needs and wishes. For example, some may want to focus on speaking/pronunciation, others may want help on grammar or writing, and still others may want to improve their reading.
My first ESL teaching experience was as a substitute teacher for a summer ESL program while in college. After receiving my master's degree, I worked in New York public libraries where I assisted many new immigrants. Later, I relocated to the Middle East with my husband and worked as a college librarian and ESL teacher assistant. I helped students with their classwork and had the chance to teach the class a few times myself. And in my spare time, I tutored students of various language backgrounds (including Arabic, Asian, and European). After returning to the Seattle area, I ran a retail business for a few years before settling to a home-based business, which has given me the flexibility to do more of what I love--language tutoring! I enjoy teaching English language skills to both adults and children.
I care about my students, and I want them to succeed! I am the right tutor for you if you are looking for a top-quality tutor who really wants to help you succeed.
My experience of teaching English grammar includes working as a teacher assistant for a college ESL class, and as a private ESL/English tutor for many years.
Most people think grammar is boring but I think it's fun and interesting! You will feel the same after you've taken my lessons. I've helped many students (of various language levels and backgrounds) improve their grammar skills, and I'm confident I can help you too!

Great Lesson! Very adaptive to my needs. — I have been very satisfied with my lessons to date. I have taken 4 lessons as of now, and in each lesson Winnie has been prepared with a lesson plan, but has also modified each lesson based on what I need or want to work on. It is an enjoyable experience every week. ...
