I have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine. I have always loved math, and music, particularly piano and guitar. I am a mother of two children - my son is 19 and just starting at the University of Washington, and my daughter is a sophomore at Inglemoor High School. I also have passed a background check for volunteering in the Northshore School District.
Throughout my children's school years, I have worked with students at a variety of ages and in many settings. I have found much satisfaction connecting with students, and firmly believe in the value of each one. Most currently, I tutor ESL students at Inglemoor High School, helping mostly with geometry or other kinds of math. I like to introduce to them flashcards on a keyring (very handy!), to help them catch up on their math facts or to study for a test. In addition, I've been practicing conversation with some students in the class with the least amount of English language fluency.
Prior to that I accompanied on the piano junior high and high school students in solo/ensemble competitions. Some were vocalists; others played instruments including the bass, violin, trombone, and alto saxophone. I have also given a couple of students piano and guitar lessons in my home. I accompanied the choir in the elementary school for four years for all their performances, including Veterans' Day, Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Spring concerts, etc.
Also, in elementary school, I enjoyed being Art Docent for 7 years. This involved presenting various artists and their works to the class, and then providing a related art project. I loved the interaction with the children, and worked to capture their attention.
For the last 16 or so years, I have been teaching Bible lessons in my church, starting at the preschool age, all the way up through high school. At the elementary age, but also with older students, I learned how important it is to use visuals. We used skits, flannel stories, props, etc. It especially tickled me the way these kids, who probably spent hours during the week playing video games with high tech, high definition graphics, were so attentively hooked on my low tech flannel stories. I worked with a group of teachers who strove to reach each child in our motley crew of personalities, intellectual abilities, activity level, etc.
We even have a few special needs children, and although we have a long way to go to fully meet their needs, my understanding and compassion for these children grew a lot.
I have participated in intensive Bible Studies since I was 14, including studies on the books of Romans, John, Hebrews, Revelation, Matthew, Ephesians, Colossians, Genesis, Exodus, etc.
I have been involved in many youth camps where I have taught/led Bible lessons. The elementary school summer camp covers the history of the children of Israel over about 6 years. I have also taught in the year-round Sunday school classes.
I volunteered in my children's elementary school for 10 years. Most memorable was my experience as art docent, in which I gave short lessons highlighting various artists and their works, and then led the class in an art project to illustrate something of that artist's work.
Also, I worked in my church's Sunday School, and annual camps for 16 years, teaching Bible lessons, etc, for ages preschool through 6th grade. I love this age - and enjoy trying to reach them using simple visuals to illustrate a point.
I studied piano from 2nd through 12th grades, with occasional recitals. I have played piano for my church for over 30 years. I accompanied an elementary school choir for four years for its performances, and I have also accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists in competitions. I have occasionally taught piano lessons.

She feels that the tutoring lessons are helping her alot with her tests at school. We are pleased and have just purchased 5 more sessions for our daughter with Melanie. Thank You. ...
