NOTICE: I am currently only offering goal-based tutoring; meaning I am not available for weekly/ongoing tutoring but am happy to help with projects, papers, exam-prep, or emergency homework help. This is due to my limited availability as I transition into a new job at the UW Center for Conservation. Hope I can still help with all your short-term goals!

Aloha!

My name is Misa, a 25-year-old woman who grew up in Hawaii and moved to Washington to pursue a college degree. Crazy right? I mean, who moves from Hawaii to eastern Washington? Well, I did, because despite how beautiful and easygoing life in the islands is, there just weren't the right opportunities for me to pursue the higher education I wanted.

So I moved to Pullman where I studied at Washington State University and received my B.S in biotechnology and continued on for a master's in science. My master's research focused on molecular techniques associated with ancient DNA and because my adviser was an anthropologist I am well versed in human evolution, cultures of the Americas, human migration, molecular evolution and evolutionary genetics. I have been published multiple times and feel very confident in my abilities in writing.

I have always sought avenues that allowed me to work with students and peers in teaching settings. As an undergrad I was a peer mentor for an intro to engineering class, where I guided students across various disciplines within the engineering field, but mostly helped with the finer details of their weekly assignments. During my graduate coursework I was a teaching assistant for introductory biology, genetics, geology, and life sciences. This covered a very large range of knowledge, so while I am educated in biology I am also well versed in other aspects of the life and physical sciences. I also managed undergraduates in my laboratory and taught them scientific techniques, data analysis, 'laboratory math', and safety training.

The bottom line is that I love teaching, and now that I am graduated and pursuing a career in industry, I find that I miss it. I am confident that with a little bit of time and motivation I can help any student understand and think more critically about the subject they are struggling with. In many cases, students just need a push toward the more interesting side of learning, and I always encourage students to look past the fundamentals and relate to what they are studying.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I was educated in general and advanced genetics as an undergraduate, then taught genetics for two semesters to 64 students as a teaching assistant during my graduate degree. I have four years of experience in genetic research which is showcased in my masters thesis and publications. As a teaching assistant, I conducted 50 minute recitations for my students and created weekly quizzes which were focused on going over some of the more tricky concepts of the material and encouraged deeper comprehension.
