Hi, my name is Rebekah, and since I was old enough to pick up books, I've lived in them. I enjoy reading and writing, and I love helping other people enjoy it too! My experience with this is extensive, beginning when I was in high school. My AP English teacher taught me how to self-proof my papers and how to read others' papers for both grammar and content. Later, my job during my senior year of college was being a Teacher's Assistant and Peer Leader. I was able to lead classes for "my" freshmen, and then during my tutoring hours, I worked with them individually on perfecting their work. I helped them find resources for research papers, I proofed for grammatical errors, I reviewed papers for content and flow, and I love each and every aspect of it! During this year of being a TA, I had the opportunity to work with several international students, and I believe that my students were successful writers even if English was not their first language.

Also, I'm a bit crazy over algebra. I hated pre-algebra; the question "Why do I have to memorize all these stupid formulas!?" was never answered. But then I opened the book of Algebra I, and lo and behold, the dots connected. I LOVE helping others connect the dots for themselves. I won't tell you the answer, but I will ask questions to guide students to the correct answer. Algebra is not about the answer but the process of getting the answer; being right is the reward for doing the right work in the right way.

American History

History is about people, and so it is a great subject to tutor or teach, because it's people learning about people.
I have a great memory and am very organized, so I tutor history in a very logical manner.

Grammar

I've always done well in my grammar studies, and I've found that the more I read, the better my grammar became. As a TA in college, I have plenty of experience reviewing writing for grammatical errors and ways to strengthen writing.

Microsoft Word

I'm very comfortable with Microsoft Word, and I'm comfortable teaching others about its use. My teaching style is show and do, so I will show students how to do something, and then they will do it themselves. I think this helps retention.

Microsoft PowerPoint

In college, I took a proficiency test for Microsoft PowerPoint. I also used this program in almost every single class, and so I'm very familiar and comfortable with using PowerPoint.

Prealgebra

In 7th grade, I did prealgebra. In 8th grade, I did Algebra I. In 9th grade, I did Algebra II. Then because I transferred schools, I did Algebra II again in 11th grade. Algebra is like a puzzle that we get to figure out, and I love helping others fit the pieces together.
My tutoring style is asking questions to determine the specific stuck point and then to work through examples, letting the student do the work once they've seen it.

Reading

Reading is one of my favorite activities, and I love helping others share the joy I feel. The best way to become better at something is to practice, and I also like to utilize the student's specific learning style and work with that.
One of my proudest reading accomplishments is that I finished the unabridged edition of Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" before I graduated from college. I hope to help others set and achieve similar goals.

Writing

Writing is so important today! In high school, I wrote two junior theses and two senior theses that were over fifteen and twenty pages long, respectively. In college, I wrote many, many papers, and I was a writing TA.

Literature

Literature is one of my passions. In high school, I took AP English and Literature, British Literature, American Literature, and Classical Literature. I am competent in both reading and comprehending pieces of literature as well as writing about literature.

Proofreading

In high school, my classmates asked me to proof their papers because I am very attentive to details. In college, I was a TA and proofed students' papers and helped them learn to self-proof their own work.

Elementary Math

Math is one of my best subjects. I view it as a puzzle to be mastered, and I love seeing others master math's problems. One of my tutoring strengths is that I am able to really pinpoint the student's weak area so that we can work to master it and make it a strong area.

Sign Language

I took ASL for two years in college. Part of the curriculum was to interact with the Deaf community in my area, so I went to several malls and other meeting places in order to interact with the people whose first language was ASL. Also, my classes were entirely in ASL; it was an immersion experience. In class, we practiced telling stories and then giving more formal reports. I earned 4.0s in all my ASL classes.

Public Speaking

I gave one of my first speeches when I was in middle school, and continued to perfect my speech-giving abilities. In high school, I studied rhetoric and speeches for two years. Also, I was involved in Future Business Leaders of America where my team and I gave speeches and presentations, both prepared and impromptu. In college, I gave speeches and presentations in almost every class, and I always did well.

Marketing

I majored in marketing at Berea College. I took several courses focusing on marketing, including Marketing Research, Consumer Behavior, and Political Communication. When taking my Business Capstone course, I was the marketing specialist in my group, and my group's project was chosen as the top project.
