My name is Chi, and I am currently a senior at Western Washington University, finishing my last quarter from home. I have finished all the coursework for my major in Japanese language and for my minor in TESL. I have had a lot of practical, hands on experience with tutoring through working with a foreign exchange student that we have on campus for the past four years. Through my TESL coursework, I have also had the opportunity to work with students as young as fourth graders to working and retired adults. Their levels have ranged from being completely new to the language to being fluent speakers. Although I have only taught English through my TESL experience, I can apply the skills and techniques to teaching Japanese as well.
At Western, I was the president of our Japanese Conversation Club for three years and volunteered throughout the on-campus and off-campus communities in different ways, such as organizing a fundraiser for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last year.
My teaching style involves not only teaching the language but comparing and contrasting it with what the student already knows. I want to build off each student's particular strengths in their first language and use that to the student's advantage. In addition to that, I love teaching the cultural subtleties that are embedded in every language and having the student learn more about their own language and culture through learning another one. This is my multicultural approach to teaching language.
I look forward to hearing from you!
