Do you want to learn to read, write, or speak Russian? Or perhaps your are looking for assistance to learn basic computer skills. As an experienced tutor in both areas, I would be happy to work with you to achieve your goals. Whether you are a beginner or looking to further develop your skills, I can help you to take the next step to further your education.
Russian Language Background:
I have experience teaching Russian to non-native speakers in multiple areas of the former Soviet Union. I also have experience teaching Russian to English-speakers in the US, and have done a variety of other linguistic work including translation and interpreting as a certified professional. I am a native Russian speaker and have been a student of English for many years. I am knowledgeable of grammatical differences and similarities between Russian and English. As a native speaker, I am able to give context to students about various Russian idioms which don't directly translate to English. With a strong knowledge of both English and Russian grammar conventions, I am able to anticipate and specifically teach to prevent common grammatical mistakes. I am college educated in the former Soviet Union as well as in the US, and I have a broad vocabulary with good awareness of syllabic inflection conventions.
Computer Skills Background:
As a former employee at Bellevue College, I assisted students in learning to use Microsoft Office Suite software to complete their assignments. I regularly worked with them to complete assignments in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I also have experience as a current library volunteer, helping patrons explore and grow as technology users. In addition to assisting them to understand basics of computer use, I also teach the skills necessary to do anything from communicating with friends and family, to searching for jobs, to buying or selling products online, to developing a hobby, new interest, or even a business. I am passionate about computers and lifelong learning of new technology.
General Tutoring Philosophy:
My teaching style is inclusive of various mediums including traditional lecture, conversation, PowerPoint presentations, visual aids, reading assignments, writing assignments, video, and audio aides. My teaching style is also flexible depending on students' individual needs. For example, I might recommend a specific film, instructional video, or book for study based on a student's knowledge/skill level. I also believe it is important to tailor my approach to each student based on individual learning styles. I believe it is important to challenge students through hands-on application (and extended conversation for Russian tutoring), but also to step back and take time to examine content more academically to facilitate the most comprehensive learning.
