Hi! My name is Decker, and I have been a tutor and educator for 11 years, teaching math at UW, and tutoring one-on-one and in small groups. I attended a Top 10 school as an undergraduate and received an Honors Bachelor's degree in math, plus a Master of Business, MBA, summa cum laude, with a GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0. I have over 10,000 hours of experience.
I am friendly, supportive, and low-key, and I really love to help people! Past results have been dramatic, not just in grades and scores, but in the student's sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
My philosophy of teaching is simple: organize, customize, and adjust.
First, we set goals, we develop an action plan to achieve them, and we work cooperatively to succeed.
Second, we customize our tactics and techniques. What works for one student may not work for another. Some people respond to pictures and graphs, others to words and logic. Techniques might include cognitive and behavioral strategies, games, real world props - whatever works.
Third, we track our results and adjust our plan accordingly. If we're not getting to where we want to go, what can we change to get there?
But mostly I'm just a patient, articulate, and supportive guide to my favorite academic subject!
I look forward to the opportunity to help.
*** A success story from fall: Student scored a 460 on a practice SAT math test in September. After 15+- weekly sessions with me, she scored 660 on a practice SAT math test, followed by a 630 on the real thing. 170 points in just one quarter, with just one session per week!
*** A success story from spring: Student was scoring Bs and better meeting with me twice per week. He discontinued for a week and received Ds or less. Two sessions with me and he was back to Bs.
