I have abundant energy, enthusiasm, and empathy, and have amassed a great deal of diverse teaching experience. I also have training as a Certified Nurses Aid, and am CPR certified.

My M.Ed. is from the University of Washington s is my B.S. from The University of Washington. My B.S. is in speech and hearing sciences.

A great deal of my training is in special education, and I am endorsed for ages birth-21. Other strengths include teaching all aspects of English and test preparation. While earning my BS in speech and hearing sciences, I also gained experience in ESL, TOEFL preparation and accent reduction which I enjoyed very much.

Subjects I have taught include:

K-6 -- English (primarily grammar, spelling, vocabulary and composition), elementary math (up to algebra 1), elementary science, health, and social/communication skills.

8th grade + -- English (composition, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling), careers, SAT/ACT prep (English portion), Pacific Northwest History, world religions, cultural anthropology, psychology, sociology, interpersonal communications, and health. I also have experience helping students complete college applications (with a high success rate of acceptance).

My career experiences have given me the opportunity to work with a diverse student population including individuals who have ADD/HD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Tourette's, OCD, anxiety disorders or mood disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder, eating disorders and more. My passion in working with these particular students has been in not only helping students to strengthen academic skills, but also to develop and implement communications and other self-help strategies to foster independence and improve overall functioning. I also have experience coaching students, teachers, families, and employers to understand disabilities and accommodations that may help improve skills across settings.

Currently I am working part-time as a consultant to do curriculum development and teacher presentations for a local non-profit organization. This position allows me to have a very flexible schedule.

ADD/ADHD

I have an M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of Washington, and I am endorsed to teach students ages 0-21.

My professional experience includes teaching at a private school for 9 years at which most of my students had ADD or ADHD. The students ranged from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Aspergers

I have an M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of Washington, and I am endorsed to teach students birth through age 21.

I have 12 years experience working with many students who have Asperger's Syndrome. The students have ranged in age from kindergarten through 12th grade.

People with Asperger's tend to have trouble with social communication and interpersonal relationships. I have a massive amount of experience working with students in this regard to help them become more independent and socially appropriate. I have developed curriculum and taught group classes for just this purpose, with great results. I have testimonials from both parents and students that attest to my skills and knowledge.

I understand that people with Asperger's have many strengths, usually a high verbal aptitude (often being voracious readers) and excellent memory for subjects that interest them. In the teaching of people with Asperger's, these strengths can be used to facilitate the learning of other subjects they find more difficult.

Autism

I have a son (now 21) who has Autism and I have been his educational and social coach his whole life...he now attends college full time.

My professional experience includes teaching at a private school for 9 years where many of my students, kindergarten through 12th grade, had an autism spectrum disorder.

I have an M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of Washington, and I am endorsed to teach students ages 0-21.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of Washington, endorsed 0-21. I taught at a private school for 9 years and grades k-12. Although most of my students had some kind of special need, I taught the k-6 students all subjects: math (through Algebra 1), English (spelling, grammar and vocabulary are my favorite English aspects to teach), science, social studies, and health. Previous to my work at the private school, I taught at a public preschool -- ages 3-5.

Hard Of Hearing

From the University of Washington, I received my B.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences, and my M.Ed. in Special Education.

During my education in Speech and Hearing Sciences I received education in some sign language, the technology of hearing aids and cochlear implants, cued speech, total communication, personal amplifiers, and more.

In my teaching experience I have worked with several students, ages 3-17 who were hard of hearing. I have used sign language and cued speech in their learning to maximize performance.

Phonics

I have taught phonics and beginning reading both as a professional teacher and a volunteer for LAP students professionally for 13 years.

My students have included beginning readers, students with dyslexia, and other reading difficulties and ESL students of all ages.

I have a bachelor of science degree in speech and hearing sciences. In that program, there was a great deal of emphasis placed on teaching phonics and articulation and applying the concepts to reading and writing.

I also have a M.Ed. and in that program, I learned effective methods to teach subjects creatively and effectively focusing on individual student needs.

Special Needs

I have an M.Ed. from the University of Washington in Special Education. My B.S. is in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Both degrees give me a wealth of knowledge of special needs of all kinds.

In my 12 years of teaching I have taught students with cerebral palsy, hearing loss, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalcula, low IQ, ADD, ADHD, autism, Asperger's, tourette's, obsessive compulsive disorder, auditory processing disorders, brain trauma, bipolar disorder, and depression.

My educational style is responsive to a student's needs and I individualize curricula to maximize students' success.
