I am especially interested in teaching and am able to teach math and science. I have taken a lot of science by inquiry instruction and actually spent some time teaching what I learned to the teachers in Norwalk. My math instruction has been elevated by my taking of math courses at local community colleges (only receiving A's). I have a natural bent for working with math, and look forward to the chance to help you with yours.
I have taught in a public elementary school setting for the past 12 years. This includes time spent in grades K (1 year), 5 (3 years), 4 (8 years). I consider my greatest subject area strengths to be math and science. In the area of science, I was chosen by the director of science to participate in several workshops that highlighted the concept of using an inquiry base. I utilized the knowledge that I gained in this area by training the entire fourth grade staff in Norwalk. I also served my school by being placed on a science committee, with representatives from each of the 13 elementary schools in Norwalk. In this capacity we were asked to review and modify the curriculum.
In math, I have recently taken two college algebra courses, furthering my understanding. I am able to work with numbers quickly in my head, and I enable students to do the same. This sometimes involves having students jot down key concepts that will help to jog their memory. By insisting that students work through things in their head, they can handle more and more complex material. I believe it is important for students to memorize the times tables. Public schools have gotten away from insisting on this. I find that this slows down their responses to all types of problems. I also think it is important to introduce real world concepts in order to make math more relevant and interesting. My excellent ability in math can be a source of inspiration to students who work with me.
