Brown University (Linguistics, Classic)
Brian recently graduated from Brown University with a BA in linguistics and classics. Standardized tests have always come naturally to him, and in high school he was a National Merit Scholar and scored a 2300 on the SAT. He also scored over 700 on all four SAT II subject tests he took, and a 4 or 5 on all five AP exams. Ever since he started taking German and Latin concurrently, Brian has found himself tutoring his peers in anything language-related. By scoring in the 99th percentile on the National German Exam, he won an all-expenses-paid trip to Germany. Brian recently took the GRE, but when not thinking about standardized tests, he enjoys reading, teaching himself new languages, and playing tuba or saxophone. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied Chinese for one year in high school, two years in college, and also spent a summer in Beijing studying Chinese intensively. I've had many different instructors and used different textbooks, so I've seen material presented in different ways. I know what worked for me, what worked for my classmates and what didn't really work for anyone. I have also done some tutoring in Chinese online.
I recently completed a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I received 120 hours of classroom instruction in teaching English, created and implemented 6 lesson plans using my own material, observed colleagues teaching and participated in feedback sessions.
I studied German for four years in high school and also in college. I scored a 5 on the German AP and in the 99th percentile on the AATG National German Exam. I have spent around two months total in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
I studied Latin for four years in high school and also in college. I scored an 800 on the Latin SAT II, and tutored Latin senior year of high school. I've studied the Aeneid and Petronius in depth, plus some Catullus, Horace, Ovid, Cicero, and various medieval Latin authors. I even participated in a weekly spoken Latin group this year.
I studied Russian for two years in college, and was consistently near the top of my class. I had three different instructors, so I've seen material presented in different ways. I know what worked for me, what worked for my classmates and what didn't really work for anyone.
