Language, communication, culture, and meaning are my passions -- as a teacher, editor, and media professional. I have more than 20 years of teaching experience on the college, high school, elementary, middle, and community levels. I have taught in the U.S. and France; online, in the classroom, and one-on-one; and worked with adults, kids, executives, and educators. I love to teach, connect with my students, and experience that moment of mastery. There is so much to learn and enjoy along the way! I have worked as a teacher, in one form or another, in every job I've ever held -- because I love it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught language to college and high school students for more than 10 years. I have degrees in English and in French, and have taught in the U.S. and in France. At the Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Rouen, I taught preparation for the GMAT exams to French business students who were studying English. I work best in immersion-style learning and using a direct method approach.

French

In addition to my Master's degree in French literature and language, I have completed all of my doctoral coursework and lived in France and Quebec. I love French culture, literature, food, art, and music. I have led cultural tours in France, and worked as the assistant director to the University of Connecticut's Junior Year in France. I currently live near Montreal and am passionate about the culture and history of Quebec. In addition to my expertise, I bring tremendous enthusiasm for all that is French to my lessons and my students.

Public Speaking

I have been a classroom teacher since 1985. I have worked in media and communications for the past 20 years. I have been interviewed and appeared on television and radio broadcasts many times, either as an expert, a candidate, an educator, or a group representative. I have worked with many media outlets over the years and have represented our companies and products at trade shows and conventions. I have frequently served as a workshop presenter and trainer for educators, community groups, professionals, and college students.

Writing

In addition to my English degree and years of communications work, I have more than 20 years of writing, editing, and teaching experience. I have worked as a journalist, public relations writer, copy editor, and content editor. I understand that every project requires its own approach. I love to help people find the right voice and expression for their writing.

Amazing! — This has been the most amazing experience that I have had in a long time. Deb has helped me learn so much about the language, and the culture. She brings professionalism to her classes as well as passion charm and humor. I feel confident that when I find myself amongst French speaking people, that I will be able to chime in. ...
