Piano

I've been playing piano since I was a child, with formal lessons starting at the age of 9 and consistent playing, accompanying students and singers, and composition/improvisation ever since. I tested out of piano requirements in my college music program and was able to complete the final stage through accompanying voice students. In the last ten years I've played professionally in many bands of diverse genres, including folk, jazz, pop, dance, and rock.

I will take you from your current skill level in piano playing to an even greater awareness of technique, chordal movements, rhythmic forms, improvisation methods, repertoire or any other elements you may be interested in exploring.

I am happy to teach musical literacy by presenting music theory lessons from a beginning to an intermediate level through handouts, lessons, and practical assignments. Assist in the development of technical virtuosity through the introduction and implementation of Hanon and Persichetti scale/finger exercises, as well as other similar patterns. Also, we will explore composition and improvisation, through assigned compositional tasks and in-person improvisation exercises, as well as book and conversational study of the many diverse approaches to improvisation. Let's figure out what kind of piano player/musician you want to be.

Voice (Music)

I began professional voice training at the age of eight, taking lessons, singing in choirs, and working under some of the greats in music education (such as George Bragg, founder of the legendary Texas Boys’ Choir and Gregg Smith, founder of the Gregg Smith Singers [Stravinsky’s favored vocal ensemble]). I am classically trained so I am quite proficient in reading and learning music, and my harmonic ear is very developed. Throughout my life I've constantly listened to and sung a broad array of genres, in fact in several professional instances I’ve performed music that spanned many eras and genres in one show. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theater and then spent about a decade playing keyboards and guitar and singing in bands that played pop, rock, folk, dance, and reggae. I have also music and vocal directed several full-stage productions. Throughout my career I’ve had the opportunity to not only sing with Dave Brubeck twice but also sing back-up for the Chieftains. Since moving to Los Angeles a year ago I’ve recorded tracks with YouTube “Top 100” star Nice Peter (of Epic Rap Battles of History), 2013 Streamy Award-winner for “Best Online Musician,” and Wu-Tang Clan Producer DJ Choco, among others.

I will take you from your current skill level in singing to an even greater awareness of technique, music theory, sight-singing, ear-training, rhythmic forms, improvisation methods, repertoire and any other elements you may be interested in exploring.

I am happy to teach musical literacy by presenting music theory lessons from a beginning to an intermediate level through handouts, lessons, and practical assignments. Assist in the development of technical virtuosity and ear-training through the implementation of carefully designed modular and intervallic exercises. Broaden your awareness of various vocal genres and examine them in alignment with your needs and interests, developing and expanding your repertoire of songs and styles. Also, we will delve into improvisation, through in-person improvisation exercises, as well as book and conversational study of the many diverse approaches to improvisation. Let's figure out what kind of vocalist/musician you want to be.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
