Upon graduation from Teachers College, Columbia University with a Masters in Elementary Curriculum and Teaching, I have taught all subjects for over 10 years. Throughout this teaching and learning, I have found it crucial to assess where the student is in their learning, find his or her strengths and promote growth and understanding through these strengths while challenging the student to face their struggles as well. I have taught students in grades 2 through 7, with a particular talent for reaching students who do not seem to fit in a sometimes rigid educational system. I have also tutored individuals both here in Brattleboro, as well as New York City and Denver, Colorado. In 2008 I was nominated for and awarded the Milken Family Vermont Teacher of the Year award.
I believe teaching and learning should be meaningful, useful and fun! While I can coach your child based on homework and classwork provided, I can also use my experience, insight and creativity to boost your child's learning through games, projects and life experiences. For example, if your child is struggling with multiplication, we might look at items in the grocery store that come in groups, play a math game that promotes skip counting or use markers and giant graph paper to draw arrays. I can provide this kind of in depth, skill building in all areas of the curriculum from social studies, to reading, writing, math, science and social skills.

In addition to receiving my MA in Elementary Curriculum and Teaching and training in intense and progressive schools in NYC, I have been committed to professional development in all areas of the curriculum. I have taken courses and workshops in teaching and learning elementary mathematics, reading and writing; participated in book and study groups in teaching and learning social studies with an emphasis on our local history; and used a variety of science kits and methods to promote understanding and the scientific process.
I have been teaching Elementary Math to a variety of ages and abilities for over 10 years.
I have worked closely with the reading specialist at my school in understanding the Wilson method of teaching reading. Through this work and more, I have been successful in advancing students phonemic awareness, stamina and fluency.
For the past 7 years, I have worked in a classroom with students with IEP and 504 designations. Through communication with districts, schools and families, I have understood and met a variety of student needs from those labeled as learning disabled to emotionally disturbed to spectrum disorders.
As a highly organized person who values the process of finding the right method for each person, I have spent a lot of time and energy designing systems for my students to stay organized as well as making them aware of the decisions they can and do make for themselves.
