I have degrees in Engineering, Education, and Business. My degrees also include majors in mathematics, chemistry, statistics, and information systems. My formal education includes two Bachelor's, two Master's, and a PhD.
My elementary education was conducted in a one room school house without electricity. I started college at 16 with minimum preparation. I was a not a good student during my first college efforts.
I served in the US Navy for three years. My employers included University Missouri, Virginia Tech, and Lehigh University of Missouri. I worked for several commercial companies including IBM, Air Products & Chemicals, and TKC Communications. I recently retired as a contractor for Department of Justice.
I have three sons, which I tutored in elementary, high school and college. I have also provided adult education training for seminars. I tutored a student in mathematics, who successfully passed the examination to get into dental college. I have tutored several student who failed to keep current in their course and needed assistance to get adequate foundation to continue on their own.
Often, I am asked to tutor a person with a specific goal such as passing a course or a test. A basic approach that I use is to first understand the likely requirement to achieve the goal. I establish or select problems to evaluate the understanding of the student, and then prepare or select problems from a text to work through specific problems until the student can validate their understanding across the required scope. If the goal is to pass a test, I usually take material based on the teacher's previous testing style and help from the student, and make one or two hypothetical tests for the student to complete and review. Frequently, students have not kept up with their homework and need understanding to follow daily assignment. My efforts frequently allows the student to become independent once they have master their previous assignments.
