I like to say I have been teaching/tutoring since "the last century." My experiences range from SOL pupils to student pilots, from those that belong to the diplomatic community to those who lived in developing countries. I recently returned to the States after three years abroad and settled in Hampton Roads. During my time overseas I taught middle school / high school math at a bilingual (French/English) school and I am now currently working at the high school level in Virginia Beach.

I enjoy taking the difficult to understand concepts of math and making them "real as rain." I travel to the location that is convenient for you. And if English is a second language for you, no problem; I can handle most of what I tutor in either French or Spanish.

And YES! You CAN get something for nothing.
Have you ever wanted to go over a subject just one more time with the tutor, but he/she was unavailable? No longer a problem. At your request, I can record the work we do in each session (voices and paper only) so that you can review it at your leisure. The videos are private and shared only with you. Watch it at home on your laptop. See it again on your tablet.
Check it in between classes on your smartphone! It's like having the tutor on-call 24/7.
And that, my friend, is absolutely FREE!

GIVING BACK TO THOSE WHO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY
I offer a 10% discount to those students of First Responders (Fire/Police/EMS), Ministers, Public School Teachers, and Military Personnel (Active/Guard/Reserve/Retired/Veteran). That's just one way I say "Thank You" to those who selflessly serve us everyday.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AFOQT

I have taken both the ASVAB and the AFOQT and have served in positions to help young officers determine their career paths.

Algebra 1

This is the type of math we all use practically everyday from simple equations to ratios, percentages, computing area, etc. The key is to know what steps to do in each particular case.

ASVAB

I have served in both the Army and the Navy as an Active Duty member and a Reservist. During my career I have also trained with or been trained by Air Force, Coast Guard and Marine Corps members.

Geometry

Geometry was the first course I personally taught. What most people are surprised to find out is that geometry is as much about deductive reasoning as it is about shapes and angles.

Microsoft Outlook

As an office manager of nine colleagues that were constantly traveling, Outlook became more than just email. I developed a system within Outlook which we dubbed the "Electronic Rolodex." It began by creating a shared office calendar. Calendar events would have a table inserted in the which contained Government Points of Contact, Hotel Reservations, Flight Itineraries, Visa Information, Currency Exchange rates, and Traveler photographs. This system allowed anyone in the office to go into the shared calendar and find, update, and send the most current information to the traveler simply by "inviting them to the event."

Along with that I use Outlook as a file management system. You know when you're looking for a specific file that came as an attachment, but you can't remember from who or which email?
I create folders within Outlook (like directories in Windows Explorer) to organize my attachments. That way when a colleague states they can't find that elusive email, I just find the file in my Outlook directories and click "Forward".
Done.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been working with PowerPoint for the last 10 years. I have created presentations that run themselves, including soundtracks, video and narrations.

SOL

I teach in the Virginia school system in English and Math. Both courses offer examinations in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). Our curriculum is guided by the objectives in the SOLs and I have served as an SOL proctor for the last two years.
As a tutor, I tailor the sessions based on the SOL objectives that prove most difficult for the student.

Fantastic Tutor! — Kelvin is a fantastic tutor. He is patient, knowledgeable, responsive, and committed to the student's success. My son is taking Geometry and was getting C's on tests. He had a tutoring session with Kelvin the night before a test for review, and scored a 92! He also helped him pass the Geometry SOL.
