Hi! I have just retired after teaching 22 years. I have taught grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. I know how to teach skills and concepts in a bunch of different ways, so if a student doesn't "get it" one way, we can try another approach. And another. I love teaching and learning, and look forward to helping kids. I've also raised two children of my own, and know what it's like for a child when homework is just a mystery. We got through it though - one of my kids is a lawyer and the other does something inscrutable with computers. I know that working together we can all accomplish many things.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I successfully taught students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. I have just retired after teaching 22 years.

Elementary Math

I've been helping kids master mathematics for more than 20 years. I know how to teach each concept in three or four ways, and am proficient at designing practice experiences to help the material move into long-term memory. Math is such a part of our world, and there are so many natural approaches that can guide a student into a comfortable life-long relationship with this discipline. It's always an honor to work with struggling students, and a joy to be with them that moment of the grand "Ah-HA!"

Reading

Reading, writing, listening, and speaking all work together to communicate with others. They are all connected.

I am experienced in bringing together these parts, making them whole, balancing them, and using them to create an environment within which a student can learn to use each piece with confidence.

Study Skills

I successfully taught students in grades 2,3,4, and 5 for twenty-two years. This included guiding students in the development of a variety of study skills in all subject areas, including a variety of learning modalities.

Honest Feedback — Elizabeth was right on time, which is no small accomplishment in the Northern Virginia area. She connected with our child and gave great feedback on her abilities. We would recommend her to any family with a child who is performing below grade level in reading or math. ...
