My tutoring methods include motivating abstract concepts and ideas (e.g. such as 'function') by initially considering easy to understand and useful simple examples that may be of interest to the student. Once I see that the student has grasped the main idea, I "add a little more math" in each explanation, eventually leading up to the formal definition. I NEVER assume that the student has any previous knowledge of the topic. Also, I find that drawing pictures and using visuals can really make a big difference in explaining a concept to a student.
