I received my certification to teach high school in Virginia in 2014 in three subjects: English, Spanish, and Social Studies (history, government, social sciences). I also help students prepare for the SAT and college applications. My 30 years of experience in the U.S. Foreign Service gave me experience in speaking Spanish, French, and other languages so I can help both native English speakers and those learning English as a second language achieve their academic goals. The students I am currently tutoring range from 7th grade to graduate school. Let's discuss how I can tailor my lessons to your level of study and specific needs. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My undergraduate and graduate degrees from Georgetown University and the National Defense University all emphasize history and culture. I completed a concentration in U.S. Diplomatic History, plus coursework in African, South Asian, Russian, Latin American, and trans-Atlantic history. Most importantly, I have not just studied these subjects, I have lived them -- from the fall of the Soviet Union to post-Cold War issues of development and democracy. I will be happy to discuss further the details of arrange the tutoring so that it meets your learning goals.
Part of my job as public diplomacy officer over the last 13 years is the management of U.S. government education exchange programs for university students and teachers. In addition, I also manage the U.S. government's Education USA program which promotes study at U.S. universities by providing counseling for foreign students in how to apply to U.S. universities and prepare for taking entrance examinations. I took part in one-on-one counseling with students overseas, I also organized group sessions and worked with other college counselors in how to present U.S. universities. Finally, I worked directly with U.S. university recruiters who periodically sought students in my countries of assignment to recruit for their outstanding credentials. My approach is to walk through applications and explain what universities are looking for and why they are asking the questions. I explain that essay questions need to provide both current examples of why a student is qualified -- the value that they will bring to a college campus -- but also a compelling explanation of future plans and how a particular university will help them achieve those plans. Regarding study of standardized tests, I explain how I was successful; namely, by taking many practice exams, noting the amount of time I have, answering quickly the ones I know and returning the more difficult ones where I use process of elimination to narrow down an educated guess. My job requires to take tests almost every year, e.g., in foreign languages as well as in substantive knowledge of policies and procedures. In combination, I can help students focus and gain confidence that will help them achieve higher scores.
My passion for public speaking began with my participation in competitions in original oratory in high school and continued as a political officer and public diplomacy officer in the U.S. Foreign Service from 1984 to the present. As a public diplomacy officer, in particular, it is my job to speak in English and foreign languages to journalists, school groups, community groups, and foreign publics about U.S. society, government, and policies. More importantly, it is my job to convince them that we have many common interests and that they should assist us in programs and activities that advance U.S. national security interests.
