Secondary English, General Science, and Middle School Math

Dear Parents,

At Grove City College, although majoring in English Secondary Education, I continued to foster my love of math and science, and thus took and passed the Praxis II in both of these subjects.

As a tutor, I have had great success collaborating with students to find instructional methods and means of approach which best fit their individual learning styles. I have experience tutoring gifted students, learning disabled students, and those battling lack of motivation. With each of these scenarios, students learned, not only to master the concepts, but the study skills and self-knowledge necessary to be able to approach and conquer new concepts independently.

I function under the firm belief that tutoring should work as an expanding framework. When the framework of a subject is too wide, my job is to determine the student's current skills and understanding, then establish a framework in which the student can find the answers independently--I do not give answers, I limit the problem to a level where the student can find the answers on his or her own. Then, I gradually expand this framework (providing fewer and fewer limits) until the student no longer needs assistance. In this manner, students experience what the education community refers to as the "gradual release of responsibility", ensuring that they don't just learn the material, but how to learn.

This "learning how to learn" is also accomplished through modeling; this is where I approach a problem in front of the student and verbalize my thought process and problem-solving skills as I find the answer. In this manner, the student is not only learning how to find the answer, but how to develop the critical thinking skills which can be transferred to other types of problems as well.

Through my patience and perseverance with students, I have seen students develop greater levels of the same--both in dealing with school and with people.

Algebra 1

As an English Secondary Education Major at Grove City College, I excelled at communicating ideas. There I had much experience tutoring at a jouvenile detention center, where I was able to successfully tutor in Algebra I.

Grammar

Grammar is what thrills my soul. Throughout my student teaching experience (as an instructor of seventh and ninth grade Composition) I continually baffled my students with my genuine excitement for grammar.

Geometry

I have my Pennsylvania certification in Middle School Mathematics, which includes geometry. I have experience tutoring mathematics at a jouvenile detention center, as well as professionally. Both experiences have taught me the joy of watching those "light bulb" moments happen as students grasp a mathematical concept for the first time.

Prealgebra

I have passed the Praxis II (teacher certification test) in Middle School Math, which covers prealgebra.

As an English Education major, math is not my strongest suite, but communicating is. Throughout my education, I served as a sort of mediator between my teachers and classmates, helping them to understand what was being taught, by rephrasing the information.

Writing

At Grove City College, I had a successful student teaching experience as an instructor of Composition for both seventh and ninth grade. As such, I experimented and became familiar with which methods of instruction are generally most effective for both middle and high school.

I was placed in this teaching position for many reasons, not the least of which was that my supervisors know that writing is what makes me tick and grammar is what thrills me most.

Literature

I am certified in English Secondary Education through Grove City College, Pennsylvania. There I took (and thoroughly enjoyed) classes in Shakespeare, American Literature, British Literature, Medeival Literature, Poetry, and other genres. Proofreading

From the time I was in fourth grade, I was the girl to whom everyone in the family--and later in the college dorm--gave papers and homework to proofread. Elementary Math

Sewing

As a child, I took sewing lessons and have thus become quite proficient in both hand sewing and machine sewing. I am very patient and gifted in breaking down explanations into easily followable steps. I have my own sewing machine, which I am willing to allow for use in lessons, and access to sewing instructional curricula.

Bible Studies

Having attended Bible college for a semester and later attending a Christian college with a Biblical requirement, as well as attending and actively participating in a Bible-teaching church from birth, I am familiar with the Scriptures. God has fostered a love of them in my heart, which has driven me to a daily independent study of them from the time I was in fourth grade.
