Andrew studied the basic and social sciences, searching for answers to some of life's biggest questions, including the role of nutrition in human health, the basis for human decision-making, and how to win in Monopoly. Born and raised in the Washington, D.C., area, he earned a B.A. in the Biological Sciences at the University of Chicago, graduated from Georgetown University with an M.S. in Physiology and Biophysics, and has earned his M.D. from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. His tutoring career began in 2010 when he signed on with PrepMatters to offer academic support tutoring and standardized test preparation assistance for high school students in the Washington, D.C., area. Since then, he helped math and science students at the elementary, high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels, including adult students, reach their academic goals through private lessons, collaboratively-developed study plans, and individually-tailored recommendations. As a published co-author, he has developed research projects in three different labs at the National Institutes of Health as well as the University of Chicago Department of Economics. He is currently a medical resident at Virginia Commonwealth University, specializing in psychiatry. He enjoys working with students of all different backgrounds and is especially acquainted with students who have unique learning styles. In an ongoing effort to understand and meet the needs of his students, he actively reviews scientific literature in the topics of memory formation, decision-making, cognitive neuroscience, and collaborative learning. Whether you're looking for a single consultation, ongoing academic support, or test-specific preparation, Andrew looks forward to working with you to establish a program of study that will help match your performance with your vision of success. Andrew is an excellent tutor. He is flexible and prompt in returning e-mails. I recommend Andrew if you are looking for a bright, focused, articulate individual who is easy to communicate with and has compassion for your student. You can tell he really enjoys helping others.
I had my last semester in college and had to take a lot of credits before I graduate. Andrew has helped me a lot on my Econ and regulation class. We had several sessions over Skype during which, he helped me to work on the outline for my final paper. My professor was tough, so I had present some really smart ideas in content. We did very well brainstorming together and wrote an outline for the paper. It saved me a lot of time. I had to only to develop and fill in the outline with already discussed things.
Second time he helped me when I had to do an assignment for my other Econ class. I was running late on deadline this time. Andrew traveled to Fairfax and we had another couple of sessions in person. He is very professional and dedicated to the work. Instead of assigned hour he stayed with me for the three and half (!) hours till we finished the work. It meant to me a lot! He went above and beyond while helping me with the assignment. Thanks a lot to him I finally graduated.
Talking about the level of knowledge in Economics, he knows Econ well. I would definitely recommend him as an Econ tutor. Very knowledgeable, helpful, professional and dedicated.
I had the pleasure of working with Andrew over Skype on a paper for my Criminal Justice class. While I was initially hesitant to work on the paper over Skype, Andrew's professionalism put me at ease. He is by far the best tutor I have ever had. I felt confident and proud of my paper when I handed it in. I have recommended him to all my friends. If you need professional quality help with any subject reach out to Andrew.
Before I signed up for 8 sessions of GRE math tutoring with Andrew, I had selected a textbook prep course to better prepare myself for the exam in hopes of scoring higher to qualify for a potential scholarship into a PhD program. My biggest challenge was the math portion and, specifically on a timed test, I knew I would struggle with the concepts, calculations and overall pressure of the quantitative sections in particular. I selected Andrew as my tutor given his current pursuits, his availability and the quickness with which he responded to my original request. I was grateful that he was already familiar with the methodology of the prep course I had chosen. I have always struggled a bit with math - my frustration may have been evident during a couple of our sessions - and though I'm not planning to study math at the graduate level, I had to be successful. Andrew showed me the ins and outs of how the exam tries to trick or trip up a test taker and specific problem types upon which to focus. He gave me resources to use to practice the test and homework assignments, and consistently reassured me that I would do just fine. When I took the test, I was shocked at how well I had done on both sections. I definitely exceeded my expectations, and I sent my scores to my top school choices without hesitation. Thanks so much for 8 worthwhile hours of tutelage!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While earning a bachelor's degree in the Biological Sciences, I completed course work in methods of statistics, proof-based statistics, probability, systems modeling with differential equations, and ecological systems modeling at an advanced college level. My current doctoral degree program features the study and application of statistical methods while exploring questions in epidemiology, clinical trials, and population genetics. In addition, my research requires the utilization of numerous statistical tests and methods.
Since a very young age, I have been an avid board game player. I have studied and practiced formal strategy for chess.
I have completed advanced mathematics coursework, including relevant topics in algebra, geometry, combinatorics, finite calculus, probability theory, differential equations, game theory, and discrete analogues of continuous mathematics. The following relevant topics pertain to my research work: logic, graph theory, decision theory, utility theory, and social choice theory.
I have completed the intermediate economic analysis sequence at my alma mater, the University of Chicago. In addition, I have completed substantial quantitative coursework in mathematics and statistics, including advance calculus, differential equations, and probability.
In addition to advanced genetics coursework in college, I also studied medical genetics at the NIH Foundation for Advanced Education in Science. As a current medical student, I continue to study concepts, pathological manifestations, and population-level observations pertinent to human genetics.
In graduate school, I completed a course in human nutrition and, in medical school, understanding the biochemistry, physiology, and pathophysiology which pertain to nutrition is vital to my studies in medicine. I am also training for an Ironman 2013 event; among many others, mastering my own nutrition is a precondition for success in this race.
Pharmacology is an integral component in both my graduate studies in physiology and biophysics as well as doctoral studies in medicine. As a future physician, I have studied pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, receptor mechanics, signaling cascades, contra/indications, and physiologic effects of the full range of drugs for each organ system.
