Drawing

I studied art at Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, where I won First Prize for a painting in my age group. I studied art in highschool; I sold a painting. While attending Virginia Commonwealth University, I studied art history.

My teaching art experience includes: substitute-teacher in Stafford County Public Schools, VA, different grades and levels, and group sessions at Art First Studio, Fredericksburg, VA.

English

Provide a thorough foundation for the subject of English: grammar, vocabulary and comprehension, listening, speaking, reading, writing skills. All levels.

Grammar

A thorough study of grammar: to include the names and purpose of the various parts of speech, and how they interact, and are used in creating good communication.
I am a certified ESL (English as a Second Language for International students), which covers all aspects relating to learning English.

Proofreading

In order to be successful in proofreading, one must first have good grammar, punctuation, and writing skills. First, the tutor reviews the basics of these areas with the student. Next, the tutor provides guidelines for training the eye to recognize mistakes, and teaches the student skills for better proofreading.

Public Speaking

Extensive experience in making presentations before a diversity of audiences:
as a speaker before classrooms, school boards, civic groups, churches,

Reading

I provide exercises in recognizing grammar, and the 'root' of words - how they are built upon that foundation (i.e. adding prefixes, subfixes), noting syllables, pronunciation, etc. Tutor shows student valuable tools in creating sounds and rhythms, pacing, and comprehension of material.

Study Skills

I provide a strong foundation of study skills and tools that can be used by children, adults and professionals to achieve success in their goals. Practical, sensible tools for organizing materials or thoughts for a creative process. Tutor has many years of professional experience in management consulting.

Vocabulary

I work with the student in developing vocabulary, that is appropriate and necessary for the student. Included in the studies are: vocabulary definitions and comprehension, spelling, speaking writing within sentences of the growing vocabulary.

Writing

I provide the basics of good, strong writing and assists the student in developing creatively, and finding their individual "voice" in communicating.

Tutor is a published writer, and previous member of national and state professional writer's organizations.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
