Hello! I am a 13-year veteran Home School Teacher of grades Pre-K through 9th grade. I teach math including Algebra 1 and Geometry, Reading, Writing (pre-K - high school), grammar, and other Language Arts, and Spanish (through high school Spanish III; also prep for Diocesan Spanish exam). In addition, I help students prepare for the SAT and I can also help those who need math prep for the GED and ASVAB.

I always try to make learning fun with games and creative activities. For older students, I provide practical examples and problems to show the relevance of what they are learning particularly with Algebra and Geometry.

I graduated with a BA in Political Science from Duke University. I served in the Navy and Naval Reserve for 12 years.

In 2012, I considered pursuing teacher licensure. In the spring of that year I took and passed the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) which tests reading comprehension and writing ability. I received 100% on the reading and easily passed the writing section. In September 2012, I took a rigorous teacher mathematics (Praxis II) exam that included Algebra 1, some Algebra 2, Geometry and Trigonometry. I passed by a nice margin. I substituted in the Richmond public schools for more than a year until I found full-time employment in the Accounting Department of a major corporation. I am currently taking accounting classes at J Sargeant Reynolds Community College. As I am a teacher at heart, I continue to tutor students through WyzAnt.

I am willing to travel to your home or meet in a public place such as the library or at Martin's grocery store cafe area.

I look forward to meeting you and helping your student succeed!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For 13 years (1996-2009) I taught K-6th grade phonics, reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, general science with lots of experiments, world history/social studies, Spanish, and math. Additionally, I am a substitute teacher in in my local school system. I have been given authorization to teach all of these subjects in the event a teacher is out.

Phonics

I taught two children how to read using the phonics approach of the Hooked on Phonics program. One child learned to read by age 4 and the other by age 5.

I also teach phonics in my local public school system as a substitute. I tutor neighborhood children in reading using the phonics method as well.

Prealgebra

I am pursuing teacher licensure. In September 2012, I took a rigorous teacher mathematics (Praxis II) exam that included Algebra 1, Geometry and Trig. I passed by a nice margin and will be working toward licensure to teach Middle School Math.

Religion

As part of my daily home school curriculum, I read the Bible with them, helped them memorize Bible verses, and read books about other religions and different world views. I also taught the History of Christianity in 9th grade.

My top three tips for starting off the school year are location, organization, and tools. First, have a quiet (as in where you will have few interruptions), well-lit location where you can spread out your work and get comfortable. Perhaps your study ambiance includes background music playing (my son always studies to music; I, on the other hand, like it quiet). Do whatever is going to create... read more

I have found with one of my own in high school that waiting to make changes to your child's study habits after you see his/her First Quarter grades can be pretty challenging. I am happy to help your child now in any of the subjects listed in my profile so that he/she will go into 2nd quarter with good study habits and a better understanding of the subject matter. Patient and Well Prepared — Carol takes time to prepare for the tutoring session with my daughter (3-year old). She engages very well with my daughter by working with her patiently and by using things in our home which are familiar to her to teach basic Spanish words. I could not have found a better tutor for our current tutoring needs. My daughter begins asking when Ms. Carol is coming only a few days after her session. ...
