Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. ACT English

Current ACT tutor. I have an undergraduate degree in English summa cum laude, and I am a published author. I have graded the ACT writing section for Princeton review as an instructor, and I am an expert professional editor who can help a student see how to write an excellent essay and to score high on the English section of the exam.

ACT Math

Degrees in biophysics and engineering, summa cum laude. Experienced math teacher at Rutgers University. I have several ACT students now and they typically raise each section at least 3 points, plus they gain confidence in their ability to take the exam.

Current ACT tutor. Undergraduate degree in English, summa cum laude. Published author of scientific materials, educational chapters and two books.

ACT Science

Undergraduate degree in biophysics, MS in Biomedical Engineering (Penn), and MD from Harvard Medical School. Published scientist, numerous peer reviewed publications including the Journal of the American Medical Association. I have passed the Praxis exam for High School science education.

ADD/ADHD

I am a board certified physician and have passed the state of Pennsylvania requirements to work with children. I currently have 4 ADHD students and am familiar with issues such as organization, completion of tasks, focus, fatigue, need to move, and most importantly, limits on executive functioning. I work with my students on both organization and task completion and subjects as needed. I often work with Fairfax county IEP teachers and therapists to help my students. I also passed Praxis for elementary education with honors, as well as the K-12 education exam.

Algebra 1

Degrees in biophysics and engineering. Passed Praxis to teach math middle school through high school. Former math teacher at Rutgers University.

Algebra 2

Degrees in biomedical engineering and biophysics. Experienced college professor at Rutgers University in mathematics. Current math tutor for students of all levels through BC calculus.

American History

I scored 800 on the American History achievement test in high school. I read extensively in the topic of American history, and travel throughout the US to important historical sites. I am a current AP US history tutor for several students. I bring extra detail to the subject to help the student retain the learning and enjoy it.

Calculus

I currently tutor students in calculus AB and BC, and also IB mathematics. I have an undergraduate degree in biophysics, summa cum laude, a masters in engineering, and have been an adjunct professor in math at Rutgers University. I passed the Praxis in MS and High School mathematics as well.

English

I have an undergraduate Honors degree in English, summa cum laude, and tutor students in English literature and in test prep. I am a published author of two books, one short story and many scientific and educational articles. I work with students on the context of stories, on grammar, and on vocabulary.

European History

I have lived in Europe and traveled extensively there, and as a high school student studied French at advanced levels including French history. My reading includes European history and foreign affairs, and I currently am tutoring two students in world history. As part of my degree in English I also studied world literature and history.

Geometry

I have several students currently studying geometry with me. I have degrees in biophysics and engineering, which required expertise in geometry. I took extra courses to complete the equivalent of a math degree, past the Praxis exams, and was on the faculty of Rutgers University in mathematics.

Grammar

I have an undergraduate degree in English, summa cum laude, and I often provide authors with professional proofreading and grammar corrections. I teach the SAT and ACT sections on reading and writing and have several current students.

Literature

I have an undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, in English literature. I am familiar with Shakespeare, Chaucer, great English and Irish authors, Greek plays, and American literature. I work with several students who want to improve their reading, writing and grammar skills. I also do SAT and ACT test preparation which includes reading and analyzing literary works.

Prealgebra

I have passed the Praxis exams for elementary education, math middle school and high school math. I have taught mathematics at Rutgers University and currently have a prealgebra tutoring student who is scoring A's in school. My degrees include biophysics and engineering.

Precalculus

Precalc is one of my favorite courses to teach. I taught this course at Rutgers University and currently have two precalc students for tutoring. I have degrees in biophysics (summa cum laude) and biomedical engineering and have passed the Praxis teaching exams for high school math.

Probability

Probability is a fascinating area of math. I have advanced education in probability and statistics and have had two students this year for probability. I like to show students both the logical ways to look at probability with examples, and use of the TI calculator.

Proofreading

I provide professional proofreading for scientific authors and am the author of many articles, book chapters, reviews and two books. I work with several students who ask me to help write, review, proofread and submit their work in school. I was an essay reader for both the ACT and SAT at Princeton review and a Princeton Review instructor.

PSAT

I was a high scorer and a National Merit Finalist with the PSAT and attended college on scholarship as a result. I have taught PSAT and SAT at Princeton review have helped several students in test prep for this exam.

Reading

I work with several students who need help with reading practice, comprehension and analysis, both for school and for test preparation. I read extensively, mainly historical works and nonfiction, but also popular literature. With my students, I read the books they are assigned and help them with understanding, discussion of the works and writing papers. I have an undergraduate degree in English as well.

SAT Math

I have taught SAT's for many years, well over a hundred students, and written a book on this subject. I have specific qualifications in math (degrees in biophysics and engineering, and Praxis exam math) and my students typically raise each subset score by 50-100 points.

SAT Reading

I have an undergraduate degree in English, summa cum laude and am a published author of articles, book chapters, educational materials and two books, including a book on the SAT. My students learn how to attack the reading section and how to analyze the questions. I taught SAT's at Princeton review and I currently have several students studying test prep with me.

SAT Writing

I am an expert published writer and editor with an undergraduate degree (summa cum laude) in English. I have graded the writing section for hundreds of students as a teacher for Princeton review. I currently have several students studying SAT writing with me. My students typically bring their writing score up a point (which is doubled, and counts for 30% of the writing score).

SOL

I tutor many high school students in subjects from math to science to English to history. As part of my work, I have been asked to help students study for their SOL exams and help them with online study worksheets provided by Fairfax county. I typically help the student think through the questions and review the subject as necessary so that the student is well prepared for the exam.

SSAT

I have taught students in this area how to take the SSAT in order to get into a selective high school and to place well. I use the same techniques and skills for SSAT students as with the SAT, but focused on that exam. I have been a test prep instructor for several years, both at Princeton Review and on an individual basis. I teach students understand the exam, the analogy questions, the math, and to feel confident by exam time.

Trigonometry

I teach trigonometry to many students each year, at all levels, as it is in algebra II, IB math, precalculus and repeated in calculus. I taught this subject at Rutgers University as math faculty. I show students methods to truly understand the trig functions, and how to derive most of the important formulae from basic principles, so that they do not panic at test time. I have passed Praxis in High School math and have degrees in biophysics and Engineering.

Vocabulary

I work with students to improve their vocabularies with a variety of techniques, including root words, vocabulary practice and test taking. I am familiar with French, Italian, Spanish and German; with these languages I help students find cognates and other methods to retain new vocabulary words. I teach the SAT, ACT, PSAT and SSAT regularly to many students who want to work on vocabulary. I have an undergraduate degree in English.

Writing

I am a published writer with numerous book chapters, articles, reviews and two books in print. I have been a writing evaluator for the Princeton review SAT test, for hundreds of students. I have an undergraduate degree in English. I have several current students working with me on improving their writing, as well as ACT and SAT prep students.
