I am a bilingual tutor with six years of experience tutoring in languages. I have a masters degree in TESOL and have experience working with students with special needs. I worked in Puerto Rico for five years, both as a private tutor and a professor in La Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico (Inter American University of Puerto Rico) in San Juan. Currently, I work with Montgomery College to provide ESOL instruction to adults.

In addition to tutoring second language learners, I also tutor in English for native speakers. For this group of students, I specialize in writing and grammar.

I have experience teaching and tutoring online, and am certified to tutor through WyzAnt's online platform.

I believe learning is an unique process for every individual, and education should reflect that. Many of the materials I use for tutoring are created for the individual student according to his or her needs. I also believe that learning is social, and encourage a communicative, dynamic dialogue between educator and student that ultimately results in student success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I offer tutoring in English grammar and writing for second language learners as well as native speakers. I have a masters degree in TESOL and have tutored native speakers through the postgraduate level. As a teacher, grammar is very important to me, and I have had success working with students of all levels to improve their writing skills.

ESL/ESOL

I have a master's degree in TESOL from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. I have experience working with students of all ages and levels on a variety of platforms. I currently teach ESOL to adults with Montgomery College.

Grammar

I have a masters degree in TESOL, and during my graduate studies I focused on English morphology and syntax. I design personalized lessons for each of my students to help them master the various areas of grammar, and create personalized exercises to ensure retention. Students will work with recognition of proper and improper grammar, error correction, and application through writing.

Proofreading

Writing is one of my strongest areas as a graduate student and as a teacher. As a proofreading tutor, I go over papers with students before they turn them in to ensure that the content, organization, grammar, and spelling are adequate. In addition, when necessary I review papers to ensure they follow APA style.

Reading

I have a master's degree in TESOL and much of my graduate research was done with reading. I have experience working with students of all ages, including students with special needs. My bottom-up methodology is focused on blending phonemic awareness with phonetic skills in early level readers. With students who have already mastered the basics, I seek our interest-appropriate texts to help them engage with what they are reading while working on comprehension.

SAT Writing

I offer tutoring for the writing section of the SAT. For this section, I work with students to write clearly and concisely within the allotted time. We work with organization, vocabulary, and grammar. I create many resources myself, but all prompt questions come directly from the College Board, which uses prompts from the actual test.

Spanish

I began studying Spanish in my freshman year of high school and continued my studies to the graduate level. I moved to Puerto Rico after high school, and it was there that I completed my bachelor's degree and master's degree in TESOL. I lived, worked, and studied in Puerto Rico for over five years.

I began tutoring Spanish students in 2009, and it was the first subject for which I offered tutoring. I design my own lessons to meet the unique needs of each students, and provide several tools for practicing on their own. I focus on conversation, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. I also include practice with reading and writing.

TOEFL

I have my master's degree in TESOL. As a teacher, I understand the importance that standardized tests such as the TOEFL have. When tutoring for the TOEFL, I employ materials from ETS, the makers of the TOEFL, as well as other online resources and activities I create myself. While I recommend at least three months of preparation before the test, I have worked with students with as little as a couple of weeks to prepare.

Vocabulary

I have a master's degree in TESOL. My final research project emphasized vocabulary acquisition through reading blended with dynamic teaching techniques. When studying new vocabulary, I believe the most effective techniques are those which treat the new words as a natural part of the language instead of focusing on them out of context.

Writing

I have a master's degree in TESOL. In graduate school, strong writing skills are mandatory. As a tutor, I help students learn to organize their thoughts and express them in a clear, academic manner. I provide guides to help students with essay structure, and review several grammar rules that must be followed when writing. Furthermore, I work with students to improve their tone and vocabulary. I am well versed in the APA style.
