ABOUT ME :)
I received a BA in Philosophy from Virginia Commonwealth University (Cum Laude) in 2010. I have many hobbies including, hiking, guitar, and movies. I am currently waiting to hear back from graduate school.
I was trained through the Virginia Mentoring Partnership and 'America Reads!' AmeriCorps program, and have 2 years of experience tutoring through WyzAnt and other agencies. My strengths lie in essay writing (both persuasive and expository), elementary math, science and english. I also can teach Latin, SAT preparation, and work well with college students.
I believe that learning should be an empowering experience. I take into account the relevant social and emotional experiences of my students to help them build confidence while reaching their academic goals. I gauge my success as an educator not just by how much my students learn, but by how my students enhance their own learning processes.
I tutor because I love doing it.
RELATED EXPERIENCE
Substitute Teaching: From 2011 to 2012, I served in the regional schools of Amherst, MA as a substitute teacher and paraprofessional. This has helped familiarize me with general curriculum across age-levels.
Behavioral Therapy: I have been trained in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) behavioral instruction and have worked with children with high-functioning autism. I enjoy working with non-neurotypical children and am sensitive to many of the unique needs this creates for families.
Babysitting: I have over 7 years of experience in babysitting and childcare. I provide compassionate, exciting engagement that fosters cultural diversity and imaginative play in a safe environment.
LET'S GET STARTED!
Rates: My rates vary from 30 - 40$ hourly. Considerations in rates include approximate prep time, and subject difficulty. Longer individual sessions receive lower rates.
Materials: There are many different way of tutoring. Generally speaking, my priority is to help your child tackle the challenge at hand and provide him or her with personalized, compassionate academic support. This means that I do not arrive on the first day with new materials or extensive lesson plans. Once we get moving and I have a grasp of your child's needs, I am more than happy to arrive with worksheets, practice exams, prompts, etc. I welcome all materials that the student or family is able to provide.
Scheduling & Availability: Earlier in the day is better. Between 5-7 on weekdays tends to be quite busy. I am willing to commit occasional weekends. Please anticipate at least 1 week between a phone or email consultation and a first lesson.
Cancellation: I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Notice sent through a text message or email is fine. :)
Thank you very much for your interest in my work and I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Eleanor
