ADD/ADHD

I have tutored many students (from elementary age to middle/high school to adult) with ADD or ADHD. My approach is the same one that I take with any other student: I carefully prepare lessons that are truly engaging and educative at the same time.

I believe ADD is just another challenge that a student can overcome with enthusiasm, focus and hard work (and a little help from a great teacher!). My patient and creative style of tutoring allows for a student to learn at her own pace and to use the methods most effective for her. No two students learn the exact same way--and that's one of my favorite things about teaching! Each lesson is a new, exciting challenge.

College Counseling

I am a professional writing tutor employed by Stanford University's Hume Writing Center, where I have been trained in college application consultation. I have tutored students seeking college application essay formation/editing, resume writing/design help, and general advice for a number of academic programs and internships.

Whether you are applying to medical school, a PhD program, or an undergraduate university, I can help you to represent yourself on paper in the best way possible.

Elementary Math

I am no math genius. I don't have a graphing calculator permanently embedded in my brain.

However for the student who needs concepts explained slowly, clearly, and in an easy-to-understand way, I am the perfect tutor! I have a patience that comes from several years of experience tutoring math to young children, and from many more years struggling with it myself!

I love to encourage the child who believes she's "just no good at math" because the numbers whizzing by in class seem daunting and confusing. I motivate my students to push past their frustrations, to practice, practice, practice until they have the skills and confidence to conquer math without fear.

I employ a number of creative and fun teaching techniques with my elementary schoolers. Sometimes we make colorful math worksheets, solve word problems by drawing pictures, play number games or have mock races to finish exercises. Sometimes we swap roles: the student pretends to be the tutor and explains to me what he's learned! And sometimes, if it's what the student needs, we just sit quietly and break down a problem one step at a time.

ESL/ESOL

I have four years of experience tutoring ESL/ESOL students. I worked with adults and elementary school children through Reston Interfaith Outreach Program, and high school students through the writing center at South Lakes High School. In addition, I tutor ESOL students in writing and English at Stanford University through its Hume Writing Center. Finally, I work as a private tutor to ESOL adults taking the TOEFL or generally seeking increased fluency in reading, writing, or oral communication.

Psychology

I anticipate a Bachelor's in Psychology with a specialization in Health and Development from Stanford University in 2014. I am a Psych One Scholar Award recipient, an Honor Roll student, and former research assistant in Stanford's Decision Neuroscience and Dweck/Walton labs. Granted a Chappell Lougee research scholarship, I was on campus last summer conducting independent research exploring the effects of instructional framing and loss aversion on preschool-age children's task completion, and this fall I will begin as a Teaching Fellow for Stanford's Psychology One program.

I can't decide which aspect of psychology is the coolest, but that's the journey I guess! In the meantime, I'm available to help students prepare for exams, formulate research topics and reports, review term papers, develop grant proposals, and clarify tricky concepts.

SAT Writing

Following a 2260 on my SAT (800W/800CR/660M), I trained as an SAT tutor at a major Palo Alto agency and then went on to offer freelance services for the past year. This summer, I am teaching an SAT prep class at Stanford. I love to see my students' confidence and scores improve, and I benefit from having taken the test not so long ago myself!

I offer a specialized program of 8-12 90-minute sessions that cover test-taking skills and SAT content, including question interpretation, guessing strategy, time management, algebra concepts, geometric reasoning, reading comprehension, grammar and essay writing. It is tailored to each student's needs, and includes certified SAT prep materials. In addition, I proctor and score full practice exams upon request to increase the student's comfort and familiarity before test day.

Saxophone

I have played alto saxophone for the past 11 years and have performed professionally on soprano sax for the past five. I currently belong to a Jazz Combo at Stanford and offer lessons in ear training, basic music theory, and beginning, intermediate and advanced saxophone technique.

Study Skills

As a Stanford student, I recognize the importance of great study skills. I help students to find and strengthen their most effective note-taking, organization, time-management and memorization techniques. I emphasize strategies such as sorting papers in binders with tab dividers, keeping track of assignments with a personal calendar, highlighting or color-coding readings/notes, studying before "the night before", drawing diagrams or artistic representations of facts, creating mnemonics and making flashcards.

Writing

“Boring, boring, boring.”

I remember that moment so well--the way my teacher's eyes rolled as she scornfully tossed my very first story back into my hands. I'd toiled over that tale for countless Kindergarten hours--but in less than ten seconds, Ms. B had reduced it to one big papery pencily lump of worthless boringness. And you know what? That story never got any better.

Over the past six years, I’ve developed a passion for teaching writing and a true love for the chance to offer my students two things that Ms. B never gave me: constructive criticism and guidance to improve.

I help writers to elucidate their thoughts, to incorporate effective vocabulary and sentence structure, to catch oft-overlooked grammar errors, and to tackle organization or content problems. I'm a friendly and fun motivator with high standards for my students. What a wonderful experience it is to look at a paper you've written a while back and think "Wow...Did I really write this? It's amazing!" I love to journey with each student toward that winning moment.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
