American History

Completed Master of Arts degree in American Studies. Interdisciplinary History courses included: Intro to American Constitutional Law, Major Problems in American History 1860-1945, History of Religion in America, and US Foreign Policy. My MA Thesis was entitled, "American Civil Religion and the Pledge of Allegiance: An Analysis of Public Discourse 1954-2004".

English

From 2010-2012, I taught English at the University and private institute levels. I specialize in Academic English. Relevant graduate courses related include: Methodology, Academic Writing, and American Literature.

ESL/ESOL

Through freelance English teaching experience, I worked with a number of NNS (non-native speakers) of English.

GED

In high school, undergraduate, and graduate studies, I was required to take and pass a number of exams. The GED is a general subject test, which I am knowledgeable in. In 2009, I passed the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST), which is also a general education based skills test.

German

I completed a number of professional German language courses during my residency in Germany. I was able to interact in German, as well as, cater to German-speaking students.

Grammar

At the University level, I have been teaching non-native English speakers grammar structure in written and oral communication courses. I have had students with a level of 0 English knowledge and have been required to teach the English language from the ground up, starting with and perfecting English grammar. Grammar is essential for students to feel confident in language learning. Outside of University teaching, I have also taught Composition and Written Analysis courses at ITT Technical Institute.

Handwriting

I currently teach English to International students in a CEA accredited English language program. In this program, I teach both oral and written communication courses. Written Communication calls for me to monitor and help teach students how to write in the English language. Most International students that I work with comes from languages outside of the Greek alphabet and require more attention to handwriting than students of other origins. I believe my work experiences have prepared me to tutor in the subject of handwriting.

Literature

Literature and writing are of a great interest to me, personally. Expressing yourself and reading one's emotions on paper are truly inspiring.

Proofreading

As an English language instructor in Germany, I was required to edit and proofread a number of different works. From short student essays, to long theses, proofreading is a ever present subject in my career.

Reading

Reading, Literature, Writing, and Proofreading are subjects that intertwine. Personally, I enjoy reading in leisure and in study. Whether it be an academic journal article, or New York Times best seller, I am passionate about reading.

Social Studies

As an American Studies MA graduate, humanities and integrated studies have become important subjects to me. In my studies, I took classes ranging from Methodology - which tackled various themes of academics, society, and beyond - to American Culture - which took on historical interpretations - to Political Science - which focused on policies and change. I have a broad range of knowledge when it comes to social studies and integrated studies. Both my advanced degree and time in a foreign country has brought about a deeper understanding of history and social sciences.

Please see below for listed themes of interest:
-society/people/groups/individual
-behavior/interactions
-interpretation
-study
-experiment
-history/time/change
-educate
-environment/places/ecology
-culture
-identity
-government/authority
-production/consumption
-science/advancement/technology
-globalization/world

Study Skills

Study skills and study strategies are necessities when it comes to being a successful student and professional. As a leader, student, and professional, I have regularly been called to use study skills. Study skills make a significant difference in a student's ability to reach goals and feel empowered.
-----
General themes I specialize in related to study skills include:

-organization (daily tasks, homework tasks, goals, achievements, assessments)
-learning (motivators, appeal, setting up an environment, respect, tranquility, background, mnemonics, learning styles)
-note taking (techniques, strategies, outlining, "what is important"?)
-proofreading/editing/rewriting/drafting
-management (time, energy, efforts, schooling, extra-curriculars)
-study (study groups, study agendas, networking)

TOEFL

Personally instructed and guided students to a passing score on the TOEFL exam, with one-on-one instruction. I was able to acquire PDF resources related to the TOEFL and IBT (e.g., Barrons & Kaplan study guides).

Vocabulary

As an English instructor and foreign language learner, Vocabulary is an important subject. The meaning of a word changes the entire meaning of a sentence. The more knowledgeable a person is as to a choice of diction, the more advanced their works become.

Writing

"The more you read, the better you write", is a common cause and effect sentence I live by. Writing is a challenging subject, but gives a student the feeling of achievement and success, unlike any other subject. Writing allows a person to express their individuality and allows a person to feel empowered. Academic writing and personal writing are both important aspects of the subject.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
