Aspergers

This is my specialty area (and I really enjoy working with this group.) My PhD program in clinical psychology offered a subspecialty in autism spectrum disorders and I worked in an autism spectrum disorder clinic for 5 years. In my private practice, I continued to work extensively with children, teenagers, and adults diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder. Our work was often centered around developing the necessary executive functioning skills for successfully handling both academic tasks and daily living. Difficulties that I can address include problems with reading comprehension, problem solving, organizational skills, cognitive flexibility, adapting to change, and making inferences and judgments.

Autism

I have been working with clients diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder for over 20 years. Throughout graduate school for my Ph.D. in clinical psychology, I worked in an Autism clinic providing assessments, skills training, individual and family therapy, parent support groups, and social skills groups. My dissertation was on parent support groups for parents who had a child diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. I continued a focus on working with this population once I opened my private therapy practice and in my tutoring. I have extensive experience in strengthening the executive functioning skills necessary for academic success and I am well-versed in the writing, implementing, and monitoring of IEP goals.

Career Development

My interest in career counseling developed over 20 years ago while I was seeing adults for therapy. I discovered that many adults with issues of depression were dissatisfied with their current career path. As you search for a career, I can help you to determine your interests, strengths, and skills. Then together, we can explore careers that are a good fit, choose a career to pursue, and develop a step-by-step plan for starting that career. This includes help with resumes, letters of interest/cover letters, and application essays. I also have experience working on career development with individuals who have special needs.

College Counseling

Over the last 20 years, I have worked with numerous teenagers as they made decisions about what career to pursue and what college would best prepare them. We then navigated the crazy maze that is college admissions, developing a step-by-step plan and schedule for all of the testing, applications, essays, recommendation letters, transcript copies, and various other details involved. In addition to working with college-bound teenagers, I also feel very comfortable working with college students that are applying to graduate school and adults who want to return to school after working or raising children.

Psychology

I earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Texas. I went on to the University of Alabama, where I earned my Master's degree and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. I taught Psychology at the college level, and have tutored students taking Psychology at both the high school and college level. Even after 25 years or so of studying psychology, I still enjoy learning about psychology.

Special Needs

As a clinical psychologist with a specialization in working with children and adolescents, I have had a great deal of book learning/training AND an enormous amount of hands-on experience with special needs issues. I am experienced with ADHD, Autism, Asperger's Disorder, Down's Syndrome, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, childhood anxiety disorders, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, and learning disabilities. In terms of special education, I have attended over a hundred ARD/IEP meetings and am very good at developing, assessing, and working on IEP goals. I am also able to teach both child and parent about the accommodations and modifications listed in the recommendation section of assessment reports. My background in behavioral management strategies allows me to decrease the behavioral issues that arise during a tutoring session, thus spending more time per session on skill development.

Study Skills

I have 20+ years of experience working with children, teenagers, and young adults on study strategies, time management skills, organizational skills, self-regulation, and other executive functioning skills. Effective executive functioning is a key factor in remedying academic difficulties. Improvements in executive functioning increase self esteem and motivation levels, helping individuals feel more competent and accomplished. I enjoy helping individuals feel more on top of their game. In addition, my background as a clinical psychologist helps me to handle the behavioral issues that can arise during a tutoring session, and my background as a life coach helps me to address any issues of motivation.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
