SAT Reading

I am certified in SAT Writing and have advanced skills in English writing, reading, grammar usage, vocabulary, etc. I can assist a student in developing grade level reading skills to improve comprehension of what they read and ability to answer questions on the material.

Study Skills

I have advanced study skills, having earned a master's degree and taken doctoral level coursework. Providing tutoring in study skills must accommodate the development and grade level of the student. For instance, elementary and middle school study skills require an assessment of whether the student is reading at grade level, understands the teacher's instructions for the assignment, and can be taught how to organize his/her thoughts and materials while preparing to study. It becomes a matter of teaching the student how to focus on the material, concentrate, formulate questions to better understand the material, write notes, and follow directions. Additionally, when reading a book for the first time, such as a text book, it helps for the student to read the Table of Contents to review the chapter headings and sections, and to also review the Index in the back to become familiar with what details the text book addresses under various categories and headings. It is also a matter of having good physical organization at the study desk, including placing writing paper, pencils, pens, and reading materials in a neat, organized way. Good study skills also require an appropriate environment in which to study, with good task lighting, a comfortable chair, a table top or desk that is big enough to accommodate all study materials and any electronics such as a computer or calculator, and in a location that is free of distractions.

TOEFL

I am certified in ESL/TOEFL.

Writing

I have a strong background in writing, including original authoring and writing of various materials, with emphasis on the proper use of English grammar, punctuation, clarity of writing, proper sentence structure, appropriate vocabulary and syntax usage, etc. I can also work with you on your comprehension of what you are reading in context and help you write meaningful reports and essays about what you have read. If you are having difficulty with writing well in English, I can help you.
