IMPORTANT UPDATE (11/24/2013): Currently I have weekday morning availability. My 'after-school' and weekend hours are full.
My name is Sonja.
I'm happy to say that 95% of my WyzAnt students report a 1 to 3 letter grade increase (those students who already have an "A" or "4" maintain their grade). This data is up-to-date as of 11/24/2013. Over 80% of my students who improve achieve better grades in a month.
I've tutored elementary math through Algebra II, GED prep, 100-level college algebra, test prep, etc.
I have solid math content knowledge. I have a bachelor's degree in math and I passed the Praxis II math exam with a 162 (VA required 147, and 162 was an above-average score).
The best way to maximize success is ensure the student completes all assigned homework correctly all the time. The second best way is to give me frequent updates on the student's progress in school. This way I can evaluate how effective we are as a team and make changes and recommendations as needed.
I enjoy tutoring. I'm good at it for these reasons: I sympathize and empathize with students' challenges, I like math, I read about math education, and I believe each student has a unique intelligence profile that informs their approach to math. As Howard Gardner puts it, it's how you're smart, not how smart you are!
Being a good tutor means nothing without my students. When my students want to achieve more I'm there to assist them.
I am looking forward to meeting you!
P.S. I am a Math Olympiad coach. I am also a member of NCTM.
P.P.S. If it's of interest to you I have a blue belt in aikido and I was a SSgt in the Air Guard.
P.P.P.S. Tutors can call their students "tutees" but that sounds strange. I think I'll stick to "students"!
