Through my teaching experiences, I have developed effective communication methods for interacting with students and parents, who are critically important in the academic setting of a child. As a student-teacher at Edlin School for the Gifted in Reston, VA, I gained experience working one-on-one with students as I was also a private writing tutor. During my employment as an instructor at Horton's Kids Inc., a small non-profit organization located in Anacostia, MD, I was responsible for teaching my students - ranging from ages five to eight - reading literacy through lesson plans I designed and implemented personally. I focused heavily on enhancing the motivation of each child through combining group work and individualized attention; I also integrated a broad array of academic subjects, including history, math, and science, into lesson plans to diversify and promote nuanced interactions with literacy learning material.

As the Fifth Grade Homeroom Teacher at Pinnacle Academy in Oakton, VA, I was responsible for ensuring the personal success of my students while teaching them the core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. I also have experience being an SAT preparation instructor and have learned the importance of creating and implementing specialized activities and individualized lesson plans to engage my students academically. The flexibility with which I approach my employment allows me to reassess a situation and develop an appropriate solution in the event of an unforeseen problem. I am certain that my motivation and creativity will be valuable in guiding your child to accomplishing their particular academic or personal goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I received a B.A. in Classical Studies from Dartmouth College. Throughout my degree, I learned of the social, political, and economic factors that influenced the rise and fall of the various peoples who occupied large swaths of the Mediterranean region. I also learned how to assess written and material evidence to attempt to make inferences about the aforementioned domains of the cultures of these peoples.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have student taught 3rd grade math and language arts as well as kindergarten social studies, creating and implementing effective lesson plans for each. I also assisted teaching 2nd grade math. I also designed and implemented weekly themed lesson plans based on the Common Core Standards to improve reading literacy for five to eight year-olds who were all at the kindergarten reading level. I evaluated progress using specialized assessment measures that were created to correspond to an individual child’s previously identified deficits. Lastly, I have been a fifth grade homeroom teacher during which time I developed curricula and lesson plans for fifth grade Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science in accordance with Virginia Standards of Learning.

Phonics

At Horton's Kids, Inc., a non-profit in Anacostia, MD specifically designed for improving the participating students' reading literacy, I designed and implemented weekly themed lesson plans based on the Common Core Standards to improve reading literacy. I evaluated progress using specialized assessment measures that were created to correspond to an individual child’s previously identified deficits. My particular students were all at the kindergarten reading level; to help them I created games and lessons directly related to improving their phonetic awareness to improve their fluency and eventually their comprehension.

Social Studies

As a fifth grade homeroom teacher, I'm responsible for teaching my kids social studies, including US History. I did so well at this particular subject, in fact, that I was promoted to middle school humanities teacher (language arts and social studies). The topics covered include Early US History (to 1865), Late US History (1865 to present), World History, and Civics. I have also student-taught kindergarten social studies.
