I am a former elementary school teacher who has tutored students at every stage from kindergarten through college. My specialization is English, both reading and writing. Developing a lifelong love for and competency in reading is the most fundamental part of academic success, because without it, learning other subjects can become virtually impossible. Helping students develop a passion for literature is my passion and why I love tutoring.

I prefer to tutor virtually, but will also meet students at the library or my home for lessons. I live in Manassas, and because I work from home, I have flexibility with daytime and afternoon hours.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a former elementary school teacher. I taught all subjects for third grade, except French. Additionally, I have privately tutored many elementary students through a former company with which I worked. My methods for working with students depend on their needs, but primarily include either their own school materials or workbooks which I provide. I meet with the students before class, assess their skill levels in the subjects where they need assistance, and then tailor programs to meet their needs.

Hard Of Hearing

Several of my family members have hearing loss, so I have learned how to communicate effectively despite hearing loss. I ask students their familiarity with reading lips, whether one ear hears better than the other, and whether volume or clarity is a greater issue. I then modify the teaching environment to maximize student understanding and success. Background noise, positioning of chairs, and clarity of speech are all important elements to consider.

Sewing

I own and manage a craft business focused on providing textile products, such as burp cloths, wipes, and blankets, to parents of infants. I personally design and produce each piece. I understand how to select an approprite fabric, how to care for fabrics both before and after sewing, and what types of stitching to use with each type of fabric. I am also qualified to adapt patterns and incorporate embellishments.
