I am a 19-year-old sophomore at Randolph college, and I'm double majoring in English and Spanish and minoring in theatre. I was a Spanish tutor for my first three semesters here, and I tutored and interned in the Spanish department at my high school in New Hampshire for three years. I love teaching one on one and in small groups.
One of the best ways I have found to help students with a subject they are struggling with is to relate it to something they know. For instance, when tutoring a college senior in Spanish a while back, I related a grammatical principle to a musical one (the young man in question was the co-founder and president of one of my college's a cappella groups), and he was able to understand a concept with which he had been struggling for weeks.
Part of why students love me (I still get bombarded with hugs when I visit my high school) is that I teach with patience and respect. No matter the age of the student I am working with, I treat him or her as an equal. I use this approach to teaching, because I personally have always learned more from teachers who respected me. This is not to say that I coddle students in any way. I expect a good work ethic, a willingness to learn, and an open mind.
Unfortunately, I do not have my own vehicle. I'm willing to travel by foot/bike up to 2 miles from campus, or meet at the Lipscomb Library on campus, unless of course you wish to provide the transportation. I can also tutor online, via Skype or another chat program.
I've worked with friends who have Asperger's for years. While I do not have the syndrome myself, I am on the spectrum and I have quite a few symptoms for a different disorder (sensory processing disorder) that overlap with Asperger's. I understand how people with Asperger's think and process things. I know how they work, and I know how to translate the world for them.
I recently sat in on a roommate mediation meeting with people I barely knew. One of the girls has Asperger's and so I had offered to help clarify other people's meanings and to help them understand her viewpoint. I was thanked by all parties.
I went to a before-school program called Seminary almost every day of my high school career. I took a New Testament course during my second semester of my first year of college, and received a grade of A- in the course. These experiences, together with in-church education, have allowed me to make use of multiple viewpoints and study methods in regards to the Bible.
I've written some pretty spectacular college essays, and I know what colleges are looking for these days. I know what sort of resume colleges will find most attractive. I got into all but one of the colleges I applied to. I applied to the college I currently attend after a lot of deadlines had passed, and they still accepted me. I started college searching in my sophomore year of high school, and I'm already starting to think about grad school. I know how to find a good fit for a student.
I was recommended as an Intro to Theatre tutor at my college by my Intro to Theatre professor. I logged almost 100 hours in the theatre doing set construction, working on lighting, etc., working on only two shows. I've been involved in theatre and tech for 8 years. While I'm not an an acting coach by any means, I know quite a bit about theatre history and tech, and can tutor in those subjects.
Very nice and flexible to our schedule. — Laura was very knowledgeable and nice. My daughter liked her and felt comfortable with reviewing material with her. The suggested meeting place had great accommodations for tutoring. Laura also was very prompt in returning calls and emails. ...
