I began playing the oboe in 5th grade, in Prince William County, Virginia. I continued to play through high school, participating in many All-County and All-Regional Bands and Orchestras, festivals, and honors groups. I attended West Virginia University, after receiving a full-tuition performance scholarship. While at West Virginia University, I played oboe in the University Symphony for four years. I played alto saxophone with the University Marching Band and played oboe with many small ensembles. I graduated summa cum laude in 1992, with a bachelor's degree in music education.

After graduating, I worked in Harford County, Maryland as an orchestra teacher. I taught in the public school system for seven years, and at John Carroll Catholic School for two. While in the public school system, I worked with all levels of string students, from beginners through high school. I taught myself viola and performed with the Susquehanna Symphony for several years. I was also manager of the Harford String Orchestra and the Harford Youth Orchestra, out of Harford Community College.

In 2002, I moved to Fredericksburg and began playing viola with the group now called the Mary Washington University Philharmonic. After a three-year break to attend law school, I returned to Fredericksburg in 2007. I continued to play with the Mary Washington Philharmonic on viola. I played oboe and viola with the Rappahannock Pops Orchestra at that time, as well.

Currently, I perform with the St. George's Chamber Ensemble at St. George's Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg. I also play with the Fredericksburg Community Concert Band, the Mid-Atlantic Wind Symphony and as needed with the Rappahannock Pops Orchestra. I played for the 2013 musical at Spotsylvania High School. Primarily, I play oboe and English horn, with viola as an alternative.

I also hold a J.D., and excel in research/writing, reading, vocabulary, spelling, and government.

When I teach, I approach each child as an individual. I also try to make learning interesting. I find all my subject areas fascinating and necessary for the development of a well-rounded individual, and I try to share that enthusiasm with my students. I look forward to the opportunity to work with your children.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Saxophone

I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in music education from West Virginia University in 1992. While in college I played oboe and alto sax, and was trained in flute, clarinet, violin, viola, and cello. Prior to college, I played oboe exclusively and I have played that instrument for approximately 30 years. Since college, I have taught violin, viola, and cello for over ten years. I have taught flute, clarinet, and oboe for approximately two years. I continue to play oboe and viola.

Violin

In 1992, I graduated with highest honors from West Virginia University with a degree in Music Education. While in college I studied and performed violin as a part of the curriculum. After graduating, I was hired as an orchestra teacher, teaching violin students from 4th grade up through 12th grade. I taught orchestra, including violin, from 1993 until 2003. I currently teach beginning violin, viola and cello privately. My experience has been that there is a great deal of crossover concerning technique with these instruments.

I have also taught myself to play viola, which is very closely related to the violin, and have been playing viola with various orchestras since approximately 1995.
