I enjoy working with students one on one or in small groups. My rates are low because I love what I do and I want to reach as many students as possible.

I have a B.A. in Dramatic Art and a certificate in American Sign Language.

I have tutored low literacy adults and enjoy the discovery when someone 'gets it'. I also teach English as an Other Language to adults. Studies do not come easy for me, so I understand that sometimes people need extra help or a different viewpoint to understand something new. I find that many times students fall behind because they find the material dull. I believe in breaking complex problems into components to make the subject understandable.

My goal is to present material in a way that the student will understand the basics and be able to move to the next level with confidence.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

i have 30 years experience as a paralegal. I spent 10 years assisting trial attorneys with civil tax litigation cases. I spent eight years at the Smithsonian Institution as the primary contact for those filing administrative claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act. While I have no direct experience in family law, I am proficient in conducting legal research using electronic search engines (for example LEXIS and WESTLAW) and know how to analyze and determine the applicability of case precedent, statutes, and regulations.

ESL/ESOL

I teach ESOL by total immersion. I tailor each session to the needs and vocabulary of the student. I don't spend a lot of time explaining grammar, but use grammar and vocabulary to help students reach their goal.

My training in theater arts has given me the tools to teach students American pronunciation as part of their vocabulary lessons. I have had the privilege to teaching ESOL to financial managers, journalists, pharmacists, accountants and other professionals.

I always remember that my students are intelligent adults who have come to learn another skill. Most importantly, I believe that the learning experience for adults should not be a chore but something they look forward to each time that we meet.

Grammar

I love English grammar. Although the fashion is to promote fluency without focusing on how or why the language works. I teach students the basic eight parts of speech, then show students how each piece fits together with the others. I teach students how to make sure that subject/verb match and the importance of antecedents when using pronouns.

My students learn that grammar is the foundation for their expressions, not simply rules that have no place in their communication. I teach students that grammar is a puzzle and my method is to show a student how to put the puzzle together to make many beautiful pictures.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in Dramatic Art and studied speaking skills, linguistics and phonetics in pursuit of a career in the theater. I have performed in numerous community theater and small professional theater productions of the years. I know (and can explain) techniques for improving speech quality and calming nerves when having to face a group.

Reading

I am a former volunteer with the Washington Literacy Council where I tutored low-literacy adults and trained other tutors on using the 'Wilson' method of reading. The Wilson method provides a structured way to using sounds to read and spell and also encourages students to write. The Wilson method is adaptable to all age levels and is great tool for those who wish to begin a life of reading pleasure.

Very Good English Tutor — Moire was teaching my sister Beginning English and she's fantastic! I don't know what more to say! My sister did not speak any English when she came to the United States. After two month learning from Moire, she can shop and dine out all by herself! Overall, I am very satisfied her tutor. I highly recommend Moire for her experienced teaching and the nice job that she does! ...
