Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked for six years at Chesterbrook Academy, where I tutored children in grades Pre-K through 6th grade in reading, writing and math. My specialty area is working with Pre-K through 2nd grade on beginning reading and writing skills. I use very structured reading and writing programs to help the child learn in a systematic way, from less difficult to more difficult.

Flute

I have a Master's Degree from Boston University in Flute and a Bachelor of Music in Flute from The University of Cincinnati. I played with the McLean Orchestra for over 20 years. I have also performed with many other orchestras in the area, including The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and the Arlington Symphony. I have taught private flute lessons for many years, including several at Park View High School.

Phonics

I have a master's degree in reading from the University of Virginia. I have experience with Phono-Graphix, the Wilson Reading program and Word Study. My last position was as a reading specialist with Chesterbrook Academy, where I often taught phonics to students.
