To my prospective students:

I really enjoy working with people and teaching my knowledge to others. My hope is that you will learn the material and have fun doing so!

Mathematics has been a very important tool during my career. In addition to my on-the-job experience, I have a BA in Math from Princeton University, was an excellent math student in middle and high school, and have been a math mentor for public school students. I have tutored an 11th grader in algebra via WyzAnt.

In addition, I have over 30 years of Information Technology experience. I teach Basic Computer for Beginners for Henrico County Adult Education. I was also a volunteer assistant for Henrico Public Library's computer classes. My skills include Internet, MS-Office, and Web Design.

My teaching style could be called “try-don’t-cry” – I’m from the “give a person a fish and they’ll eat for a day; teach them how to fish and they’ll eat for a lifetime” school of thought. I will show the student how to do something – then let the student try it out.

Algebra 1

I teach both the basic principles of Algebra, and how Algebra is used in the real world. If your knowledge of Algebra is variable or unknown, or if word problems are causing you problems, I can help!

Microsoft Excel

I teach MS-Excel as part of a Basic Computers course for adult learners. I have also used MS-Excel extensively during my career in Information Technology to prepare various spreadsheets. Last, but not least, I keep membership statistics for online groups that I run using MS-Excel!

Microsoft Word

I teach MS-Word as part of the Basic Computers course for Henrico County Adult Education. I have also used MS-Word extensively during my career in Information Technology, to prepare various documents such as program specifications. Last but not least, I keep my resume current using MS-Word!

Microsoft PowerPoint

I teach MS-PowerPoint as part of a Basic Computers course for adult learners. I have also used MS-PowerPoint extensively during my career in Information Technology to prepare various presentations. Last, but not least, I use MS-PowerPoint to create slide shows that publicize my business!

Prealgebra

When I was in elementary school (K-6), I was considered something of a math whiz - I could even multiply 3-digit numbers in my head! As an adult, I mentored 5th-grade students in math via the company I was working for at the time. I welcome the opportunity to help your student improve his or her Prealgebra skills!

SAT Math

Back in the day, I received an 800 when I took the Math portion of the SAT. I recently had a chance to look at some SAT Math practice exams and realized that much of what I learned back then had not changed, and that I was still familiar with most of the techniques and concepts. I welcome the opportunity to help you or your student do as well as possible when taking this test!

General Computer

I have over twenty years of experience doing all types of computer work. My career has spanned mainframe programming, UNIX-based development, and Windows-based web design. My most recent work has been creating computer-based training (courseware) for the web, using tools such as Dreamweaver and Moodle. I have over eight years experience working with HTML – this includes using JavaScript for writing scripts and CSS for creating style sheets. Logic

My experience with logic began in mathematics class - most branches of math have theorems that need to be logically proven. My career in Information Technology depends entirely on logic - almost all computer programs include some type of if-then-else decisions. Last but not least, I love nearly every type of puzzle - some, such as the aptly-named logic puzzles, and sudoku, are totally dependent on logical thinking!
