I have a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. This education included virtually enough for a Bachelor's in Mathematics. In addition I have approximately 40 years work experience in the aerospace field, most of it designing hardware, which always involves significant math.

I am currently retired but have always enjoyed working with younger engineers and have often acted as their mentors. This may have been as an official position, but usually just happened by itself since I never minded interruptions to help them and never criticized them for what they did not know - we all have many things we don't know.

The homework assignment given this student in her school class consisted of a type of problem I have never before seen given in any high school or college class. I am familiar with the problems (finding roots of high order polynomials). Most are extremely difficult to solve unless a computer is used. Without using a computer the only method is educated guesses and trial and error. That is why I used the term “nasty”. Maybe not the best term to use but it expressed what I felt at the time. These problems are quite easy to create but very difficult to solve because there are no “closed form” solution methods. I felt this was an unfair situation created in the classroom. Einstein would have had difficulty.

This student was in no way ready for the material I was requested to tutor him on. I considered it almost criminal to take money to do something that could not be done. The student was aware of the problem before I informed the mother of the problem and that I, in good conscience, could not continue on this path. Her response was to state that she was going to get another tutor, rather than correcting the actual problem.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Mathematica

I purchased my first Mathematica license in 1989 and have been using Mathematica ever since. As an engineer it was invaluable for doing modeling and simulations. I found it especially valuable for numerical integration problems pertaining to the propagation of light. Mathematica has also been very useful when tutoring students in calculus and differential equations.
