I've been a self employed drama coach for 10 years within my own company. I specialize with children ages 3-13 and can turn their acting and public speaking fears into dust. I also can help with basic elementary schoolwork, utilizing theatre games and tools that make facts 'stick'. Children LOVE me. I have one of my own, plus 3 close nephews. Most of my experience in teaching utilizes some type of game, drama therapy... using what we need to learn as our main focus.
Communication and 'getting to the meat' of the matter is what I do best. I don't leave, 'hoping' the kid got it. I leave knowing the kid got it. Test taking skills, and memorization skills I can provide assistance with, again, going back to drama. Actors have to memorize lines, actions, and emotions. Memorizing dates, facts, and spelling is very easy to teach when you put stories behind them. Then VISUALIZE where you where when you learned them. It's a great technique.
I would need to know what our focus is before our lesson to give me time to prepare the lesson-plan. With me you will find a creative fun, and knowledgeable tutor, one you will most likely want to work with time and again.
Having a college degree, and having worked with elementry aged children (3-13) my entire adult life, I can offer your child a wide range of expertise to cover most, if not all subject area in the Elementray school curriculum. My own child (age 13) enjoyed his own personal tutor throughout his elementary days, and I even took it a touch further working as a substitute teacher for two school systems (2006 Hanover County, VA) (2008-2011 Henrico County, VA). I run my own theatre company for children ages 3-13, and teach children through a variety of lesson plans incorporating theatre games as a means of implementing visulazation to stimulate the learning process.
Microsoft Publisher is one of my favorite software programs to work with. I began working with this program in 2001 and continue to work with it daily. I own a small theatre company for children and I have created almost all my marketing material through Publisher. Anything from a double-sided business card to a call for auditions, you name it, I have created it. I can save addresses, phone numbers, and names, and put different data into different documents. I know how to copy and paste in the event a person I am sending my creation to does not have Publisher. (and that is quite often). I can insert clip art, and know how to find appropriate clip art on the internet if Publisher does not have exactly what I am looking for. I can create my own color schemes, line widths, borders, anything. I truly am an expert with Publisher, and can teach anyone to become an expert as well!
Microsoft Windows is NOT a document preperation program as many people seem to believe. Windows is your platform, the actual system your computer runs off of. My own experience has been nothing but Windows, with a brief stray to Vista, and a quick return to Windows after being very disappointed. Windows is easy to learn. Once you learn it on one computer, it is the exact same on all others. Your start button is located at the bottom left hand of your screen. You click that and it opens upward giving you your choices for what you would like to do. Anything from logging onto the internet, to accessing your recent documents. I can't begin to explain Windows here, but it got it's name from the "Windows" that pop up when you 'click' on an item. Right now, I am typing in a "Window'. A box, with a window like border. I can sit down with your child and teach them all there is to know navigating through a Microsoft Windows platform. (and most likely all your software as well)!
I just LOVEEEEEEEE Public Speaking! That does put me in the minority. And that is just fine by me. I do have a minor in Speech from Longwood University, and I believe that alone should certify me. However, I have gone above and beyond in the public speaking world, for performing is one of my favorite things to do. I competed on the Forensics Team in high school and all of my college years winning state and national competitions. I took every Speech class I could in college and earned an A in each one. I run a small theatre company for chilren and teaching them the fundementals of public speaking is on the forefront of my personal requirements of my curiculum. I make public speaking fun! I turn fears into dust!
I love to sing and song-write. I've been a singer all my life and have a degree in Musical Theatre. I recognize talent when I see it, and I also recognize potential. Songwriting is 98% heart and 2% skill. Generally songs follow a pretty predictable pattern; ABACB (or in otherwords: Verse, Chorus, Verse, Offverse, Chorus) It's that C verse that will trip you up every time!
That 2% skill has to be spot on! That will make you or break you. I don't promise to be an agent, or make you famous. But I can help you pull from your heart, make your songs make sense, help you sing them, put a tune to them, make them flow, find some good words that aren't overused and in the process develop some great self-esteem!
While I am not a singing coach (yet), I have had several professional ones, and I do hold a degree in Musical Theatre. I am a singer, and have won a National singing contest through Mars Music, held at Universal Studios in Fl. I also have one MANY local ones. I own a professional karaoke system with over 3000 songs. A Sure Wireless microphone, mixer, Yamaha speakers, the works. I know the proper techniques for singing, the proper placement of the diaphragm, and just what 'sounds good'. (Head voice vs. Chest voice, etc.)
