I am an attorney licensed in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. As a trial attorney, I spent many years writing legal documents, preparing for trials, and basically organizing my thoughts so that I could effectively communicate in a court room setting. To one extent or another, the skills that I have mastered must be acquired by every student if he or she is going to have academic and professional success. I currently teach English to Spanish speaking adults at St. Anthony's in Falls Church. I also teach photography to adults at the Northern Virginia Portrait Photography Meetup Group. I do this because I love to teach, and because I have a talent for it. I am a strong believer that a well-organized curriculum or learning plan is a key to successful learning. I am also a strong advocate of learning fundamentals such as the phonics approach to reading. In my experience, much of the difficulty children have in school is the result of a disorganized approach to teaching. Teachers in public schools are often forced to change curricula by school administrators, even when they are having success. My approach to teaching is to take one simple step at a time, and to make sure the student grasps that step before moving on to the next.

I have experience with teaching ESL and I have developed some excellent methods for my students. I currently teach English as a second language to a large class of adults at Saint Anthony’s parish in Falls Church. I specialize in teaching English conversation, and I do this by using sentence patterns. I do not teach English grammar directly; rather, my approach is to teach grammar indirectly through the use of grammatically correct phrases and patterns. This method has proven to be very easy for my students.
I have been running a photography group in Northern Virginia for about 2 years.
I have over four hundred members in my group and I regularly give classes on various aspects of photography. The last class I gave taught the participants how to use the hyperfocal distance to pre-focus their cameras (a street photography technique).
I developed methods for teaching grade school students study skills through my experience with teaching students diagnosed with ADD. I found that these students had particular difficulties keeping track of their homework assignments and were completely disorganized with their schoolwork. I consulted with a highly regarded biology teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School whose son had suffered from this learning disability, and he gave me many techniques for dealing with students with similar problems. I found that these techniques were very effective in helping all types of students become more organized in their study habits. I have used some of these techniques my adult ESOL students, and they have proven to be highly effective. When helping a student improve their study skills, I always begin by examining the bag(s) they use for carrying their books and materials. I also look at how they record their class assignments. Once I complete that initial survey, I can begin by showing them how to use a day-book, how to organize their classroom materials, and how to develop a daily routine for completing their homework and studying for exams. Technology can also be a good organizational aid for certain students. As an example, students can use their phone cameras to take pictures of class assignments and/or notes on the blackboard.
