ADD/ADHD

I have experience working with ADD/ADHD children through work with CompEdPlan---where specialized instruction takes place. I work with DCPS students implementing compensatory education plans---providing customized tutorials. I am familiar with 504 plans, IEPs, and have tools and techniques to aid in the academic improvement of students with ADD/ADHD.

Dyslexia

I am certified to provide Specialized Instruction to students with special needs. I have vast experience with students with dyslexia, as well as students with communication disorders. I actively supervise and design tutorials to assist students of all ages with various levels of achievement needs.

Elementary (K-6th)

I can tutor Elementary subjects (K-6th). I have exceptional methods of relating English, Language Arts, Reading Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, etc. to students. My experience comes from working daily with local area general and special education students.

ESL/ESOL

I have extensive experience tutoring and assisting students at all levels with ESL/ESOL. My experience has come with one-on-one personalized sessions with students from various backgrounds and countries. I incorporate unique methods to ensure optimal learning with students, children and adults.

Music History

I am an accomplished pianist with a vast knowledge of music history. I have studied music from the Beethoven to Mozart, organ and band music, to spiritual music. I play the piano by ear, but am trained to play music by sight. I have experience in multiple genres regarding music history. For example, the importance of jazz to music culture and how Paris and other cities abroad greatly impacted the success of jazz in the USA. I also have great knowledge of how Negro spirituals evolved into popular gospel music that is still enjoyed today. I have traced the history and roots of jazz and blues to gospel and the early music of slaves brought from Africa. I have a great working knowledge of music history from several eras and centuries.

Phonics

I am a communications educator and specialist and work with elementary and high school students who need assistance with reading. I work with students and adult clients who have communication issues relating to speaking and reading. I have experience assisting students with the basics of phonics and mastering drills. I prepare customized tutorials and take my students through the basics of phonics to more advanced drills. I use digital aids as well as flashcards; there is always a thorough assessment done first.

Public Speaking

I have taught Public Speaking at the university and college level for over fifteen years. I teach the basics of constructing speeches and tailoring your material to fit your audience. I work with speakers who have communication apprehension, and those who just want to improve. I work with all ages.

Social Studies

I am a college professor with a background in Rhetoric and Journalism. I have vast experience and knowledge of many types of history. I provide tutoring assistance to elementary school students in Social Studies, creating tutorials from learning state capitals to the basics of American history. I create tutorials based on the individual student's learning needs whether it is memorization or repetition. I also provide assistance with social studies projects that demonstrate the human condition in the midst of social and historical lessons.

Special Needs

I currently work with elementary and high school students with special needs. I provide compensatory education to special education students in the Washington, DC area. I provide private instruction and customize tutorials. I my areas of expertise are in Communication Sciences and Disorders including Speech Communication. I participate in continuing education seminars yearly.

Speech

I have worked as a Speech Instructor for over 15 years. My experience in the classroom, and lab has been with students of all ages and levels. My tutorials start with basic principles and we progress at the students comfort level.

Study Skills

I have vast experience helping students organize and manage study time in school and with homework. I work with students of all ages and learning levels. I create study tips and suggestions and work with the student to develop strategies for better academic productivity.

Theatre

Able to do speech and theatrical coaching. Vast experience with creating monologues, and presentations for performances. Able to develop skills around delivery and combating performance anxiety.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
