A veteran English instructor, I have held ESL teaching positions with the Arlington and Alexandria Public School systems for more than 30 years. I have also practiced technical writing and editing for nearly 20 years in the Washington, D.C. area. I have my B.A. and M.A. degrees in English (University of Wisconsin and Georgetown University), have completed 12 post-graduate credits in Education (Virginia Commonwealth University), and am state-certified in teaching English as a Foreign Language.
Besides being a literature aficionado and master grammarian, I believe in writing that engages the reader, that gives him a glimpse of a part of himself he is not conscious of and that makes him feel passionate. Key components of engaging writing that I deeply believe in are the importance of choosing the right word--the word that precisely connotes your intention at the same time it seizes the attention of your audience--and the importance of syntax, by which I mean the rhythm and cadence of a well-constructed sentence or passage, resulting from how the words are formed and ordered and connected and punctuated.
For those students having difficulty in interpreting what they read, I am well-versed in literature and literary analysis, with a specialty in American Literature.
