Thanks for looking at my profile, I look forward to the opportunity to meet you and work together!

I am a recently retired Federal government employee, who worked in Information Technology for over 35 years. I am currently working as a substitute teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools, for secondary school and high school math and computer/information technology; and, as a tutor for mathematics in the Adult Learning Program. I have also tutored in the Huntington Learning Center program, with major emphasis on math and SAT.

My education, from high school all the way through college and a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, was at highly selective schools. I tutored math, physics and chemistry while I was in high school and college; with my recent retirement from the government, I am "returning" to my love for solving problems and sharing my passion for sharing knowledge and helping others to succeed.

I have always felt that Mathematics is interesting and can be fun. I can break down difficult concepts, thereby helping students understand the concepts in all types and aspects of math problems and the step-by-step process of solving them. My primary focus is building the student’s confidence, through thorough explanation of the basic concepts involved, by interactive practice and feedback.

I love to work with computers! I see it as an exercise in logical thinking: computers are, basically, stupid; you must be very clear and explicit in laying out the problem to be solved and the algorithms for the solution(s). I see this as a very close parallel to tutoring and sharing knowledge with other people.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taken mathematics courses throughout my education in high school, college, and Master's. My training, ending with a Master's in Chemical Engineering, was at highly selective schools and required a high proficiency in advanced mathematics. While in high school, I regularly tutored others in math.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Windows since the initial release, of Windows 1.0, in 1985 and use Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 8 now, on a daily basis (for work and “play”). In my position with the Federal Government, I was responsible for providing expert support to my organization in its use of computer hardware and software, configured to the US Government Configuration Baseline, currently for Windows XP and soon to be upgraded to Windows 7. I use both Windows 7 and Windows 8 on my home computers.

no, it is perpendicular ... parallel means the two lines have the same slope (multiplier of x); perpendicular means the two slopes are negative inverse of each other (when multiplied together, the product is -1).  Since -1/2 * 2 = -1, the two lines are perpendicular.

parallel lines have the same slop; perpendicular lines have slopes which are the negative inverse of each other, ie, when multiplied together the result is -1.   slope of y=3x+8 is 3 slope of y=-3x+4 is -3   The two lines are neither parallel nor perpendicular...
