I believe anyone can learn any subject if they can associate with the subject matter. Part of that ability comes from the student, part from the teacher. I have the ability to present subject matter in a variety of ways depending on the student. I have taught grade school age children math with crayons and coloring books (and really bad artwork), teenagers writing, math and science with current events and their daily interactions and I have taught college students a full semester of accounting using just a debit card. When it comes to computers, whether it’s a grandfather learning to surf the internet, a mechanic keeping track of expenses in Excel, or an HOA president making a presentation; I start with a task and then build on the skill set through discovery and testing. I believe the most important thing a teacher has is their ability to connect with the student so that the student wants to learn. I do not accept “I can’t do it” from the student or “he/she can’t do it” from the parent. The student just hasn’t done it...yet.
I am not a professional teacher; I am a businessman who has worked his way up, learning every day and every step of the way. I believe that education is a lifelong commitment and works different ways for different people. I focus on teaching one-on-one in those subjects that can be figured out, not memorized. I focus my tutoring on Math, Accounting and Business, Physics, and Information Technology but I have successfully applied my teaching style to other subjects such as Writing, History and Chemistry. I work on the basics and let the student understand the concept instead of just getting the answer. I believe in teaching the small steps and showing your work. I think that if the student keeps it simple and repeatable, they will do considerably better when the pressure is on. Test anxiety is cured through confidence. Confidence is gained through repetitive success.
Most of all, I aim to teach in a way that ensures the student retains knowledge and can build on it in the future. By doing that, the student learns how to learn. By learning to learn, the investment the student made for the Algebra 1 class that is giving them such a hard time today can help them in their organic chemistry class 4 years from now in college.
I have been an accounting tutor for over 9 years and have helped both accounting and non-accounting students to understand both the basic and complex processes of accounting using simple, common sense methodologies. Accounting is an unusual subject for most people but I find that the problem most students have is that they never were taught the underlying principles. It's one thing to memorize accounts and procedures, it's an entirely different thing to understand what you are doing. I find that teaching a few simple processes allows the student to simplify even the most complex accounting problems.

Truly a Remarkable Tutor! — Tom Brown was such an awesome tutor for my son recently! He patiently helped him through Accounting II, a class he had struggled with when taking before. Tom always came to the house when scheduled (even when it had snowed!), showed up prepared, and spent as much time as needed working through the intricacies of an accelerated online class with my son. He explained and showed in detail through wor ...
