I am a professional ESL teacher with experience in the local public school district as well as our state colleges and universities. I currently teach ESL at a community college, and have been doing so since 2005.
I specialize in ESL for academic purposes. I teach grammar, writing and reading at all levels, but especially enjoy helping aspiring college and graduate students prepare for study at the university or college level. I regularly teach TOEFL classes, and can help students increase their TOEFL scores. I know all the tricks to the test, and also have a wealth of materials that can help you study.
When teaching writing, I carefully analyze a student's grammar and can focus in on exactly what they need to elevate their writing to the next level. Over the years I have carefully developed my own method of teaching vocabulary for writing - you don't just memorize lists of words. I teach students to use patterns in the language and words in context. This is a far superior way to learn to write English.
If you need help improving your reading, whether for TOEFL or another purpose, I can help you identify common text structures and teach you to identify the way texts are organized, which will make understanding even the most difficult texts a little easier.
I always take the student's goals into consideration first when planning any program. Every lesson is tailored specifically to the student, and designed to help you achieve whatever is important to you.
I hold a VA state teaching license with endorsement in ESOL K-12. I taught in a public elementary school for 6 years. I taught all grade levels from K-6, mainly language arts (reading and writing), but occasionally other subjects as well.
I have a state teaching license with endorsement in K-12 ESOL. I also have 27 graduate credits in TESOL and a PhD in a foreign language. I currently teach ESL in a community college and have over 10 years ESL teaching experience.
I taught in an elementary school (I am a licensed teacher) for 6 years, and during that time often worked with children in the early stages of reading (K-3). I have experience in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching phonics, and have used it to work with students with disabilities. I prefer this method for students struggling with basic letter sound connections and have been very successful using it as an intervention. I have also been trained in Word Study and have used it as spelling instruction with students from first to sixth grade. I have also worked with older literacy students who required basic letter-sound and writing instruction.
I have a PhD in Slavic Language and Literature, a Master's degree in Russian literature, and an additional degree in translation of Russian language. I have also taught Russian at several US colleges and universities.
I have been teaching TOEFL preparation courses at a community college for nearly 10 years. I have taught specialty courses in all sections of the TOEFL test. I have created many of my own methods and books for teaching TOEFL preparation.
I have been teaching ESL for over ten years, and before that foreign language. I have developed my own method for teaching vocabulary through sentence patterns and context instead of isolated words. I also make a distinction between vocabulary for writing and vocabulary for reading. I think failure to do these two things makes more vocabulary instruction tedious and ineffective. My vocabulary instruction is aimed at making tangible, measurable changes in a student's reading and writing ability.
I have taught writing to ESL students as community college instructor for over ten years. I have created my own written materials for my courses, and use a method which is highly effective because it is tailored to each student. I evaluate a student's writing and focus specifically on the vocabulary, grammar, and language use areas that they need, but are lacking or using incorrectly in their writing. I then provide themed academic reading and writing assignments, along with appropriate key vocabulary and grammar that the student would be expected to use when writing on that topic. I also teach the structure of writing, essay planning, test essay writing, and writing for academic purposes.
