Hi, everyone! My name is Christine, and I'll soon be graduating from James Madison University with a degree in music education. Prior to attending JMU, I attended Miami University of Oxford, Ohio as a middle childhood education major with a concentration in history and math. I'm currently student teaching in Fairfax County, teaching general music at Freedom Hill Elementary and Choral Music at James Madison High School.
I've had experience teaching students of all ages including from the very young to the college-bound. I've been playing flute since 1998 and singing in choirs since 1996, eventually leading to a job as a voice teacher at the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia for a summer, along with several music internships working with students in the vocal area for the Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir. In addition, I have previous tutoring experience with students in math, reading, and history. I also have some experience working with students with high-functioning autism, ADD, ADHD, and Asperger's Syndrome.
My educational philosophy revolves around providing active, guided learning experiences. Every student is capable of learning, it's just a matter of finding what works best for you! I consider myself very patient and willing to work with students at all levels of learning and education.
I have a variety of specialties:
- In music, I specialize in teaching flute, piano, and voice. I've studied flute for 13 years, piano for 16, and voice for 16. I am a classically trained singer with experience in opera and musical theater.
- In math, I specialize in pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. My favorite, however, is algebra. My specialty is in students from fifth grade up to 11th grade.
- In history, I specialize in world history, social studies, American history, and some East-Asian history and culture. My favorite subject is American history, particularly the subject of the Civil War era.
- In the language arts, I specialize in reading skills, spelling/grammar, phonics, and etymology. I am also fluent in Korean and Japanese and took several years of Latin.
I'd love get to know you! Please contact me if you are at all in receiving lessons.
