Hello! Thanks for taking the time to view my profile! I am excited about the opportunity to work with you to achieve your learning goals!
I am an educator with a passion for helping others succeed. My earliest experiences in the classroom began as a middle school student, as a volunteer for the Council for Exceptional Children. Becoming a peer mentor to students with disabilities in my school was the beginning of my journey as a teacher. I continued this into high school, and decided to attend Kent State University and become and Intervention Specialist. I spent my student teaching in an elementary school, and absolutely fell in love with this profession. During my college career, I also found work as a substitute Instructional Assistant, and as a student worker at KSU's Student Accessibility Services office. All of these experiences allowed me to see the educational spectrum for students with disabilities, from preschool to post-secondary.
For the past six years, I have worked with students in the public school classroom, covering a wide variety of content and related skills. I have also had the pleasure of tutoring students in grades K-8 for the past year, in subjects from Phonics to Algebra. I am a certified Special Education Teacher, with experience teaching students on the Autism Spectrum, Specific Learning Disabilities such as AD/HD, and Intellectual Disabilities. I have also worked with general education students through organizations like Best Buddies International.
I decided to work towards my Master's Degree a few years ago, and graduated from Capella University with an advanced degree in K-12 Teaching and Learning in 2011. I have a deep belief in equipping students not only with the core academic skills they need to succeed, but also the organization and independence to carry their achievements forward for years to come. I completed my Master's Degree online, and I feel this taught me many skills that I can pass along to the students I work with.
Individualizing tutoring sessions has become one of my passions. I enjoy the freedom to integrate each learner's unique characteristics into a lesson plan that can build upon their strengths while also targeting areas that could use some improvement. I feel that integrating technology into tutoring sessions can be extremely beneficial when appropriate, such as iPads, computer based training, and even iPhone apps! I have had great success with my students using these methods, as well as the good old fashioned paper and pencil when that will serve an individual better. A cookie cutter approach to tutoring is definitely the opposite of my personal belief of what works best for accelerated learning!
I look forward to working with you!
