Hello! I love all things related to math, but I especially like applying math concepts to real-world problems. My education (two degrees with honors) and experience as an Engineer have proven to be beneficial to my math students. Tutoring is something I very much enjoy - I love helping students “get it”! I have over 25 years experience as an Engineer and over 10 years experience as a trigonometry Tutor. Additional tutoring experience includes math and algebra grades 4-14.

I specialize in homework help on-the-fly. Got a problem that you just don’t understand? I am sure I can help you find the answer and understand how you get there. I tailor my methods to accommodate the needs of the student. Please let me help you on your path to success!

Elementary Education:

Algebra 1

Algebra can be a bit confusing when we first start learning about it. In my sessions with students, I like to emphasize the practicalities of understanding the questions and intelligently arriving at the answers instead of memorizing formulas. Specifically, algebra involves understanding the effects of adding and multiplying numbers, variables, and polynomials, along with their factorization and determining their roots. In addition to working directly with numbers, algebra also covers symbols, variables, and set elements. I can help you navigate these topics to prepare you for the next level of learning.

Elementary Math

Working with younger students is a pleasure! Math can be a scary subject if we do not have a really strong foundation of math skills. I align tutor sessions with the section of the lesson plan each student needs help with. Topics we cover include math properties, basic math skills, and working with fractions and decimal numbers. We learn to apply these skills successfully to real-world "story" problems. Through positive reinforcement and a team-oriented approach, math becomes fun and intuitive. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

In pre-algebra, quite a few broad topics are covered in preparation for learning algebra. Students need a good base foundation in order for their learning pyramid to be stable. Topics include: operations with natural numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, and negative numbers; prime factorization, finding greatest common factors (GCF) and finding least common multiples (LCM); commutative, associative, distributive, and other properties; exponents and roots, rational and irrational numbers, and order of operations (PEMDAS or GEMDAS); writing and evaluating variable expressions, working with polynomials, and solving systems of equations; and reviewing basic geometry topics. These are the most common topics my students need help with regardless of their level. Translating word or story problems into equations we can solve successfully involves a good understanding of these topics - I can help you with that!

Trigonometry is an extremely useful subject if we understand it fully. Historically, it was developed for astronomy and geography, but scientists have been using it for centuries for other purposes, too. Besides other fields of mathematics, trigonometry is heavily used in physics, engineering, and chemistry. It is especially useful in the programming of software. Practical applications include 3D graphics, animations, and simulations we see in film, video games, and military applications. This is my area of particular expertise. From navigating trigonometric identities to applying trigonometry to real-world problems, I am happy to help.
