About Suzette

I have taught and tutored for over 20 years in K-12 and Adult private and public schools. Currently I am certified in Virginia and Maryland in Art, ESL, and English. Along with teaching Adult GED courses, and taking ACT, Masters Comprehensives, and the National Board Teachers Certification Exam, I have taught ESL in Intensive English Institutes (IEPs) to assist teens and adults in language skills to take the TOEFL. Some of my teaching has included work in Adult Vocational Training Centers and an Adult Alternative High School and I possess a B.A. in Art, a M.A. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and a M.A. in Counseling.

As a teacher, I believe focused learning and practice (includes homework) helps students progress quickly. Whatever your goals, when you improve your reading, writing, knowledge of literature and English Language skills such as Speaking, Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening or Test taking skills for TOEFL, Praxis, or GED, your confidence in and enjoyment of these subjects will increase.

For English Language Learners, if you have been studying English as a Language for a while and feel "stuck" or sense you are not making significant progress, you may have hit what research describes as a "plateau."

The good news is you can overcome a plateau by making vigorous efforts. Students readily gain greater language proficiency by using several approaches. One approach is setting measurable goals and consistently practicing language skills. Another helpful technique involves using materials of personal interest, while still another is interacting with native speakers in the community for feedback. These are just a few useful ways among many I can share with you to enhance your language learning success.

For those who want to develop their creative talents in drawing, painting, or a specific media or just expand enjoying and expressing yourself artistically, several means have proven useful to further releasing that creative bent. Interactive creative journals among other techniques I can guide you in can provide a way to record a design idea, a scene, or an experience as it comes to you.

Proofreading

Proofreading your writing can be challenging as you have put a great deal of thought into what you wish to communicate, and hence you are often quite sure you got your point across to your audience. However it can be difficult to ascertain what aspects of your writing are actually clouding the picture or miscommunicating your ideas often due to familiarity with the topic and numerous attempts at rewriting a piece. Therefore an objective reader can quickly point out unclear or confusing elements. Ensure your work is polished; a proofreader like myself can ponder and review your writing.

There are many elements involved in strengthening reading skills. Perhaps practicing phonics and phonetics is needed. Good writing takes time and is created best through the process of brainstorming, developing a rough draft, editing and revising. If authors go through 100s of edits prior to publication, can you expect to write perfectly the first time? And many of us do have this misconception, "If I can't write it perfectly the first time, I can't write." Get help to polish your writing.
