I have taught and tutored for over 20 years in K-12 and Adult private and public schools. Currently I am certified in Virginia and Maryland in Art, ESL, and English. Along with teaching Adult GED courses, and taking ACT, Masters Comprehensives, and the National Board Teachers Certification Exam, I have taught ESL in Intensive English Institutes (IEPs) to assist teens and adults in language skills to take the TOEFL. Some of my teaching has included work in Adult Vocational Training Centers and an Adult Alternative High School and I possess a B.A. in Art, a M.A. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and a M.A. in Counseling.

As a teacher, I believe focused learning and practice (includes homework) helps students progress quickly. For English Language Learners, if you have been studying English as a Language for a while and feel "stuck" or sense you are not making significant progress, you may have hit what research describes as a "plateau."

The good news is you can overcome a plateau by making vigorous efforts. Students readily gain greater language proficiency by using several approaches. One approach is setting measurable goals and consistently practicing language skills. Another helpful technique involves using materials of personal interest, while still another is interacting with native speakers in the community for feedback. These are just a few useful ways among many I can share with you to enhance your language learning success.

For those who want to develop their creative talents in drawing, painting, or a specific media or just expand enjoying and expressing yourself artistically, several means have proven useful to further releasing that creative bent. Vocabulary

SAT Writing

SAT Writing: Improve your writing by utilizing the process writing approach. While tutoring you to enhance your writing, a variety of tools will be incorporated to provide further support and strengthen writing weaknesses.

TOEFL

Taking the TOEFL with confidence on test day is greatly enhanced in a number of ways. I work with TOEFL students to further develop their speaking, writing, grammar, listening, and pronunciation skills. ACT Reading

I have taken a number of major tests such as SAT, GRE, Praxis and hence utilized and polished test taking skills. Also I have taught a number of students test taking skills to ensure they succeed in the test taking process

I am certified with VA and MD to teach English as a Second Language.

Bible Studies

I have a Graduate Level Bible Certificate and along with use of Bible resources, an inductive Bible Study approach provides great insights and understanding of the Bible.

Drawing

Professionally, I have taught K-12 Art for six years, and I am certified in VA and MD to teach Art which includes drawing, painting, sculpture, art history, etc. We'll experiment with various techniques to help the student artist develop a visual vocabulary such an interactive art journal. These journals include drawings, quick studies, and reflective notes on experiences of art in a range of paradigms and will aid in gathering skill and focus artistic subject matter.

Painting

I have a B.A. in Art which included course work in painting. Currently I am certified in Art K-12 in Virginia and Maryland and have taught art for K-12, and I have taught painting as Art Certification and teaching in art includes teaching painting, drawing, sculpture, multimedia, art history, etc. I include instruction in technique for different painting media and styles and periods of painting.

Career Development

I am a National Board Certified Counselor and I have worked in a variety of environments to guide students in exploring their career interests. Techniques such as interest surveys, quick writes, and browsing career exploration resources aid an individual in defining interests for career development.

Praxis

I have taken a Praxis II test and passed it 12 points above the required score to get certification to teach English Language Arts in Virginia

SOL

I am certified in Virginia to teach English and ESOL K-12 and I have for example taught English 9, 10, and 11 students and particularly the 11th graders take the SOL Writing and SOL Reading. Thus I raise students awareness of the SOL standards, tutor them to attain the required content and skills, and review with them using sample SOL questions to ensure success on SOL tests.

TEAS

There are sections of the TEAS that focus on English grammar and vocabulary and involve the student in reading passages, and I could assist students who are seeking this type of assistance.
